Great Benefits/ Bad Managers

Pros

Great Pay, Great Benefits, Pension, 401K matching, annual performance bonus, lots of good people Most employees are world-class, nice, helpful, compassionate, you can find helpful mentors, foster great networks and friends. Chevron cares about their employees safety, has lots of health programs. Great gym and classes if you have the time.

Cons

Last two managers I've had have been horrible. These are the 25plus year managers who probably have not taken manager training in a long time and manage by intimidation and wonder why their employees are not giving them their best. Very conservative company. Business casual, no jeans. You can sit next to someone for months and they will not say hi to you if you aren't in the same team. Too much training for low-risk employees. Too many layers of management that cause lots of delays in making business decisions. Behind the times with creating and fostering for a younger employees so no wonder after someone interns here they would rather move on to another company. Chevron fosters career development but only to cater to Chevrons needs. I've been told I don't need any additional certifications or an MBA. If you have to switch jobs internally, there is a committee that you have to trust to decide where you should go although they go through the paperwork of making you think you're applying for a job you like only to be told you are going to go into another position that you didn't apply for. They only give you 5 minutes to think about if you'll accept the job or stay where you are at which just puts you on a blacklist for future jobs. Also the good jobs are already slated to Chevron MBA program employees, a rotational development program, or a hi-po in which most middle career employees are not qualified to join.

Pros

Very talented co-workers. Chevron does a good job of hiring excellent engineers and support staff. Houston (1400 Smith) is top shelf, offices are nice. Work/life balance is better than average, depending on the project you are working on. Chevron offers a lot of internal education and learning courses, for all aspects of the oil/gas industry. If you are a contractor, you are treated very well at Chevron - just like staff.

Cons

Politics mean more than talent. It is nearly impossible to get a promotion, unless you know someone. Base pay is very low compared to service companies, and the huge bonus just gets you back to even. The problem is that the bonus isn't guaranteed. The pension plan sounds good on paper, if you can survive 20+ years without getting laid off. Chevron just laid off 1,500 staff this past month, many of them 20+ year staff members who were not close to retirement age. They gambled their careers on company loyalty and job security, and lost. At Chevron, you are just another number. When they are done with you, they don't recognize your hard work or achievements. The annoying micro-breaks and corporate trainings are fluff. Middle management is inexperienced and costs the company millions in bad decisions. Layers of micro-managing supervisors is the norm.

Pros

Smart team members. Team leads care about your professional development. Everyone has a voice when making decisions (which is empowering as an individual contributor). Internal recognition system in place that allows up to 10 $50 gift cards to be sent to peers as a way to say "thank you" (in addition to supervisor-led team event bonuses). Nice touch to encourage collaboration. Nice campus/cafeteria. 9/80 work schedule. 8% 401k matching. 100% approved non-profit matching. Open door policy - literally schedule an appointment for a good reason (Mentorship, networking, etc.) and they will generally accept. High performance culture that focuses on results while considering behaviors; yearly ratings based on 50% results, 50% behaviors called "the Chevron way". Pay scale structure encourages technical excellence which means becoming a manager isn't the only way to have a rewarding career.

Cons

IT organizations (ITC, ETC) have more rungs on the organization chart to climb versus business units. The top of the IT organizations seem to be Earth Scientists or Engineers who transitioned to IT, instead of traditional CS or MIS. Subject to boom-bust cycles. Pretty regular reorganization a every 3-5 years. As expected, the organization slower and less responsive to change. This cascades to the people. This may change as baby boomers retire. Not a con but your direct supervisor (and their peers) have a huge effect on your performance reviews and managed moves. Essentially, all direct supervisors and managers get together to rank you among peers, determine your raise, identify any job opportunities, etc. Networking is a must.
