Pros

Upper management was readily available and open to communication. Great work/life balance and high level of understanding about family commitments. Easy to work from home when necessary through use of company "loaner" laptops. Great IT support

Cons

Company seemed wasteful in their spending towards food for meetings (every single meeting was catered) yet not generous with raises/bonuses/rewards. Attitude in the office was most employees would give up having food at meetings in order to have higher pay. Also, management and HR not very willing to work with people who make mistakes - no second chances are given. one mistake, and you're out.

Pros

Plenty of on-line training. Work schedule is usually flexible. Tuition assistance available. Laid-back office environment. Company is well respected by most clients. Benefits are relatively good.

Cons

Reward and recognition is virtually non-existent, except for maybe project managers. If your not in the right clique at the office, you'll be the first on the chopping block, regardless of how good of a worker you are. Engineers are treated as disposable labor and if there isn't enough billable work available, their hours are cut until they are laid-off. Human resources is done through the company website and it's very frustrating to get employee issues reolved. Your often asked to relocate to remote areas if you want to stay employed with the company. Junior employees have little opportunity for advancement and mentoring is very poor. Their project delivery model is very top-heavy with too many project managers, accountants and administrative assistants. Engineers and designers don't rate very high in the project delivery process. The engineering and design work for large, high profile projects is outsourced to countries where the pay rate is cheaper.

Pros

CH2M Hill is a great name to have associated with your career portfolio. You will meet a lot of talented individuals. Some offices are full of wonderful people that make coming to work a joy every day (even Monday's).

Cons

Employee development is not openly supported. It is difficult to obtain funding from the company for just about anything. It is not easy to actually try something new or to get involved in cross business opportunities. Because the company is so big, overhead costs are astronomical and employee salaries for junior level employees are well below average. Benefits do not help to bring the total compensation package up to par. As an engineer, I have not felt challenged and I have not gotten opportunities to really use the skills that I acquired in college. There seems to be a general lack of participation by upper management to help develop a career path with specific goals or milestones for junior level staff. It isn't what you know in this company, it is who you know that will help you attain your goals and help you receive the recognition you deserve. Overall, CH2M Hill is a great place for junior staff to gain experience but probably an even better place to use a career stepping stone.
