Pros

Good benefits and facilities, on par with regular big companies. Generally nice people and smart engineers. Lots of technical knowledge in the organization.

Cons

Time off policies is ridiculous. In theory it is unlimited but in fact it is very dependent on managers' discretion and therefore creating lots of tensions for just getting time-off. Among the six managers/directors in my group, only two of them would actually give people proper time off. Other four director/manager would use any excuse to discourage people taking time off. Engineers who have family/friends overseas BE AWARE! If you ever want to take vacation overseas (> 2 weeks), they would make it really hard. Lots of low-level managers and some directors have ZERO social abilities or management skills. They have no regard of family/personal needs.

Pros

I have learned a lot in the cellular division at Broadcom. I -like many others- got the opportunity to go beyond the initial assignments and learn about many system aspects. Internal transfers are easy if not encouraged. Compensation is OK, used to be much better.

Cons

The cellular business got killed by the Beceem acquisition. The VP at Broadcom was buddy with the CEO of Beceem. After 3 years of going nowhere, Broadcom eventually acquired renesas but CEO decided to pull the plug after 9 months. Way to much politics now and those who screwed up never faced the consequence of their acts. Titles are very much inflated and meaningless. Those who just get a free ride get the same recognition as those who do the work.

Pros

Interesting leading edge technology, really bright colleagues, a great place to progress and very attractive rewards. Immense flexibility and free Vimto.

Cons

A lack of effective management, inability to enforce coding standards, group politics and a lack of focus reduce what should be an excuse to excel to a moderately underperforming company. A lack of hard technical training prior to action slows projects. A lack of teamwork.
