Pros

Salary and benefits are very good. Company has a 3 day work from home policy but that doesn't mean your specific department will allow even one or two days telecommuting. There are also company shuttle buses for people in the suburbs. Lots of success with marketed products. Commuter pass or parking in Kendall Sq is covered by the co and a nice perk.

Cons

Serious problems in the Clinical Operations department in last few years. Expect to work nights and weekends and don't complain about it; random layoffs occur each year and then those eliminated headcount are completely replaced. Most of us are completely buried in email each day. Policies/procedures and departments change faster than you can keep up with and promotions go to very few of the most favored. Its all about who you know and if you appear to be buying-in to middle and senior management chaos. Human resources reps care only about supporting Sr Management and may not be that trustworthy. Lots of fear to speak up or raise long-outstanding problems. Departments are constantly re-named and or re-organized so you never know who is doing what. Its never clear what you have to do to get promoted and its getting more difficult to take a class or attend a conference.

Pros

It had all the key functions of a typical job and was a reliable means to an end, as it continued to provide me with a regular paycheck.

Cons

It was overall a mess, with no 'clear structure in place for employees to advance their career or meet their career goals. The company seemed very bogged down in hierarchy and internal politics, making it hard for senior management to make effective decisions or support their subordinates. When things went wrong, and to cover up the inadequacies or mistakes of senior management, certain employees would become the scapegoat and be blamed, blackballed, or bullied instead. Oddly, in some groups, such as Medical Writing, it seemed junior writers were given responsibilities or complex cross-functional initiatives to take on that would typically be done by more experienced writers at other companies; this seemed to result in a lot of confusion across the board when Medical Writing was interacting with other functions at the company. The different functions at the company also seemed to worked in silos and it was NOT collaborative, which seemed to stifle innovation and creativity, and prevent any real progress from happening. Working at Biogen seemed like a waste of time, as it felt more like we were just turning the wheels of a car to keep it going, but not doing anything more to make it work better (ie, upgrades, repair). I saw no promise in this company.

Pros

Biogen's history and trajectory. Niche market.

Cons

Executive team is a joke including the CEO M. Vounatsos. It has become a boy's and women's club. Lots of talented people leave for only the incompetent to remain. Not being run as a large organized corporation. Toxic environment and very young Directors who have no idea what they are doing. VP titles are given to friends.. Not the Biogen that I used to know prior to Vounatsos.
