Pros

Overstock can be a fun place to work, if not a bit juvenile. Schedules can be flexible and facilities are nice.

Cons

Although I honestly believe this company is run by people with good intentions, there is no organization or sense of direction. The CEO is a great man whom deserves respect as he truly cares for his company but the company has a very poor structure. There are way too many departments and managers. There is no consistency in the management of each department. Some managers are too laid back and unproductive while others (the majority) take themselves much, much too seriously. I think the folks in upper management would be surprised to hear what gets said about all those VPs and Directors in addition to what one Director may say about another, it's really uncomfortable to be around. To all those Directors and VP's, it's not a competition so pull back a little. To be successful there means you have to enjoy working in an environment where there is no or very little training, no follow up unless the wheels fall off and no real sense of direction. What is important today may very well be replaced tomorrow which will result in a whole new set of marching orders. If you like to work where there is a common vision and a sense that everyone is working to a single goal, don't work there. If you want even a minimal amount of organization, look elsewhere because it does not exists at Overstock. Bottom line, you can do better than working at Overstock. Lots of glitter, very little substance. I've been away for a couple months now so my comments have most likely been tempered by time.

Poor leaders, lack of direction

Pros

Overstock has a free Lagoon day for all employees and their families, which I thought was great, and they also host an annual concert for employees as well. The company is growing, and it was cool to be a part of the retail growth while I worked there.

Cons

Leaders are not approachable at all and not willing to listen to criticism or valid complaints. I frequently left work in tears because I was so unhappy, and I felt that no one cared about making the environment better. I also think they care much more about the bottom line than their employees -- and a lot of other people left the company around the same time I did for the same reasons.

Pros

I was able to do amazing work and to develop my skills.

Cons

The culture is horrible. It's real-life Yertle the Turtle. No one should work for Overstock.

Some facts to counter the emotion in this post: 1. On most recent employee satisfaction survey, 62 % of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Overstock executives provide strong leadership for the company. Only 16% disagreed or strongly disagreed with this claim. As an individual executive, Patrick Byrne currently has an 80% approval rating. It was at 90% a few years ago. 2. Retention is steadily improving. It is almost 30 percent better YTD than it was in 2012. The low point was after we lost money in 2011. That spike in turnover was based on results, not on personalities or emotion. We still have a ways to go to get back to the low levels of total turnover we were experiencing in 2009 and 2010, but we will get there. 3. At the end of the day, Overstock.com exists because of Patrick Byrne. Venture capital didnt fund this company, Patrick Byrne did. 1,450 people and their families have jobs here because of that... Most of them are happy with the executive leadership, but there are always some who are not. We just have to keep trying to make the company a better place, and we make progress on that every day.
