Pros

There are some smart people left that can be learned from if you go out of your way to bother them. If you get in with the right people, your chances of success are greatly increased. It's all about politics and nepotism, so if you're moderately decent at that you'll be way ahead of anyone else. Depending on your team, there is also nothing to do, at all, ever, so if you like doing nothing you'll thrive with the rest of the people doing nothing. Except for the holidays when the executives bark bad decisions at everyone. Sometimes they pass out alcohol for no reason. Which is definitely a pro. Also Lagoon day and the other random parties they have are quite good.

Cons

The executives are clueless. Incompetence, laziness, entitlement, and cronyism are apparently requirements to become part of the senior management. There is no leadership. There is a handful of indolent, inbred fear mongers that exert their power with contradictory and incompetent decisions that are unchallenged due to the nature of the structure of the kleptocracy. The CEO will send us emails with photos of him surfing in Australia during Christmas time while we are working through the night to make sure we keep his party fund well-padded. The President and CEO make a mockery of company-wide meetings where they make sex jokes and talk about drugs in between their incoherent babble with slides of strategy road maps where "the words don't matter." The sex and drug stuff might actually not be a big deal and maybe even be cute or charming if not for the fact that the rest of what's going on is so ridiculous. Millions of dollars go to whatever new lawsuits decide to show up any given month that Overstock refuses to take out of court despite their leadership's anti-government obsession. Then they take the expenses directly out of the already meager 'bonuses.' Brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, best buddies, and booty calls all report to each other and get high profile positions despite the obvious lack of merit on every level from every member of the group being described. It is quite embarrassing and incestual, whether or not these folks realize they are being talked about and made fun of. But in reality it doesn't matter because they are in charge. Many people don't even know who they report to. Organization charts change before they finish being implemented. Some people even report to themselves in the system, and some teams don't report to anyone at all. It is utter madness. The CEO hires contractors and has several pet projects that that bleed out value from the company like a slashed artery. He's completely checked out, as are most of the tenured employees of the company.

We appreciate your sentiment. We’ve made a lot of changes and know there’s still work to do as we align the organization and make improvements for employees. Many of those changes have come because people have voiced their concerns and ideas. We will continue to improve as we receive and implement ideas based on our colleagues’ feedback.

Pros

Overstock.com is a great place to learn about the complexities of an online retail business. The company attracts some extremely talented and passionate employees. The business model that the original leaders put in place is innovative and has the potential to be very profitable. I am grateful to Patrick for bringing so many jobs to Utah.

Cons

The senior team, vp's and above, are absolutely the worst group of "leaders" that I have ever encountered. They spend way too much time trying to be liked by the president, afraid that they will fall out of her grace from day to day, they consistently belittle each other and not one member of the remaining team has enough backbone to truly speak their mind. The president is an extremely emotionally immature leader that throws temper tantrums and lashes out when she things don't go her way. The "leaders" ignore the Silent Whistles that speak ill of the president and they are much too worried about their own salaries and stock benefits than the true health of the company. I am amazed that the chairman of the board and the board members tolerate such poor leadership, and make no mistake, they are painfully aware of the issues. Nepotism and cronyism are rampant and act as a plague to the morale of the employees. The leaders say all of the right things but lip service is the result. They have come to despise the excellent leadership qualities that Mr.Tryon worked hard to put in place and from all appearances, they have come to despise the culture etc. of the state of Utah.

Pros

*401k, *the people in the trenches are hard working and innovative. *Compensation is at market for most

Cons

*Constant turnover at the highest level of the company. In the last two years we have lost our SVPs in people care (HR), business development, technology, and legal. Look at our 5 year turnover rate of the leadership group. We have also lost several VPs, Sr. Directors, Directors and Managers. Although these are spun as people moving on for personal growth many of us see how people are forced out. *Work life balance: This should be called work balance because you have to balance work and hope for a life. While it is understandable to have to do some long days while part of management this is beyond. People, myself included, have cancelled vacations, missed recitals, games, graduations, weddings, funerals, and more. Meetings are a way of life in the company lasting into the early evening making it very difficult to plan anything outside work. *Nepotism: Amazing how family members of the highest ranking people in the company are all in fortuitous positions ( we call it the first family- that should be self explanatory). *Fear based leadership: I have seen numerous people reprimanded in a group setting, so much so they left the company. It is not uncommon for the President or SVPs to call a person into a meting and publicly humiliate them. I have also seen a manager, director or sr. director lose their job carrying out the vision set forth by the senior executive team and then vilified after they leave. People in all areas of the company are in constant fear the President will release her rage on them and they will be out of a job. This should not be a surprise since the motto is "if you are not going to kick a man while he is down, when will you kick him". *Talking out of both sides of our mouth: We celebrate our military service members (as well we should) by touting their leadership and other abilities. Where are they? All our military who were in leadership roles are gone. What happened? good one day gone the next. Does our culture not mesh with their traits? Great we support Wounded Warrior Foundation and Special Warrior Fund, but money donations are not everything. Give a man a fish... *Tail wagging the dog: If our Senior Executive team is not going to back and trust our "leadership team" (VPs, Sr. Director and Directors) why have it? *No direction: we rarely give an idea or new business unit a chance to take off. Each project is given minimal time to correct bugs before someone feels they need to swoop in and save it or scrub it and move on.
