What a mess!

Pros

I wish I had something positive to say about this bank. Unfortunately, I do not. It has been riddled with scandal after scandal and remains only a shell of its former self. As banks cycle through these sorts of problems on a fairly regular basis, I am sure Barclays will rise again but not for a good long while.

Cons

The recruitment was amazing! Barclays recruited me over the course of 11 months. It took that long to organization a package that I and my family could live with. Within 21 days of my coming onboard, the entire management that had recruited me so carefully had all been replaced. All promises made with no long in effect and I found myself scrambling. Horrible experience!

Dysfunctional organisation

Pros

Smart offices and some very good people mainly overhired and underemployed. Ambitious growth plans to try to break in to the top tier of private banks.

Cons

You are expected to run to stand still while the organisation continues to hire only "A players" and force ranks existing staff to meet the "vitality curve". Roles tend to be execution focussed and staff seem to be afraid of not being in "back-to-back" meetings in case they are thought to have some slack. Consequently challenge and debate is not welcome as everyone is hoping that they will end meetings early to get a breather in before the next. Low morale and employee engagement - almost none of it emotional. Long hours and presentee culture. Consequently vulnerable to losing staff who to other FI's who will happily bid up the price for staff whose only real reason to stay is the money.

Pros

Ambitious headline program of work. Goal to be top wealth manager within 5 years. Central location within New York City.

Cons

Accountability absent. Lots of deadwood. Management focused on tactical issues and not leading to execute the strategic vision. Social employer.
