There are a few smart folks scattered about the company.

Directors and VPs suffer from acute short-termism. Most business decisions are made with an eye towards the next earnings report rather than as part of a larger long-term strategy. The key to getting promoted is to suck up to directors and VPs. Hard work and ingenuity comes a far second to office politics as a way to get ahead. This results in mediocre and subpar employees at the manager and director level.
