Pros

Encourages employees to participate in open source, conferences etc. Flexible working hours. Good cash awards. Hacking days, Sabbatical.

Cons

Not many promotion opportunities and poor guidance on how to achieve a promotion. A tendency to use open source or acquire rather than building IP in-house. Technical challenges are few. Too many managers.

Thanks for taking the time to give feedback and It’s great to read you are enjoying our benefits and flexible working environment. We are coming up to our mid-year review, which is a good opportunity to review your objectives, discuss your progress, and your development plan with your line manager. If you feel you are ready for more challenging work or goals that stretch you should ask for it and agree with your manager how to make that happen. Sometimes it can feel there are too many managers in a situation and I suggest you tackle that with your line manager so you both have a deeper understanding of why. There are defined expectations of the differences between the project and product manager, for example. You can also find situations where people are playing multiple roles e.g. a line manager and an engineering manager is common. Arm are very open to trying new approaches to how we operate. Have the team considered being more self-organised and taking on some of the management responsibilities themselves. I hope you feel the culture is open enough for you to be able to explore these ideas and be part of our continual improvement. The Arm grade framework provides information on roles at different levels in the organisation and grade is determined by a combination of the outcomes & capabilities needed and the experience the individual brings to the role. We are open about who was promoted and why – it’s worth discussing with your line manager how this applies in your group. If you feel that you need further support to understand how promotions and career development works, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your groups People Business Partner. Many thanks for taking the time to give us constructive feedback. There are a number of very valuable positives which you cite about working at Arm, all of which contribute to a healthy working culture. With regards to your point about empowerment, at Arm we strive to give everyone a voice, and the chance to put forward thoughts and ideas in a supportive environment. Our behaviours reflect the importance of a workspace which strives to empower the individual (‘Be your brilliant self’), within a team. However, if you wish to discuss these points in more detail, please direct your comments to Glassdoorfeedback@arm.com, where we can address further.

Pros

Arm provides great benefits, which allow employees to just focus on how they can best contribute to the company. Great, collaborative company culture. -- Competitive salary -- Good bonuses -- "FlexPot" benefit that help reimburse kid's college tuition, pay for personal growth, etc (thousand of dollars per year) -- GREAT time-off benefits (4-5 wks vacation, 4 wk sabbatical every 4 years) -- no-hassle business travel budgets -- respect for work-life balance The company culture is very collaborative; all about "we, not I", so there are few problems with big egos. Everyone is helpful and cooperative. There isn't a significant divide between managers and employees; there is little emphasis on "hierarchy".

Cons

-- Dealing with disperse geographies (notably San Jose, Austin TX, and Cambridge England) creates challenges. Many people seem to report to someone whose office is thousands of miles away. It's not uncommon for someone in San Jose to report to a manager in Austin, who reports to someone in Austin, who reports to an executive back in San Jose. This works better for more senior people, who can work independently; new college grads need a lot more guidance so need to be co-located with their manager and others in their group. -- some work areas are being changed from cubicles into Facebook-style long work benches, due to space constraints ... although I would never want to work that way, apparently new college grads don't mind

As with any company there will always be challenges and areas for improvement. Individual team cultures can vary at times based on their leadership. However, the goal is to have a rich and fulfilling growth-oriented culture that spans across the global organization collectively and I believe Arm is well on its way to achieving this.
