Pros

ETEC division paid better than standard AMAT because ETEC's OT and on-call standards were inherited from Perkin-Elmer and AMAT was unable to move the ETEC non-exempts to AMAT salary standards without having a mass exodus of experienced people. Stock options were good when they were not "under water." Kaiser NW medical option was a great benefit! Good separation package at the time.

Cons

Lay-offs lurk at every downturn. Reviews are not based on your actual contribution to the business but rather on how an employee in a particular group fits on a performance curve. In other words, if everybody performs excellent in a group of 10, somebody has to fall into the standard or substandard area because the review is tied to the pay increase.

Pros

Applied is headed in a new direction with Solar. Solar along with all other energy related business should help it diversify its products.

Cons

There is a lack of cohesion between executive and senior management both inside the same divisions and between divisions. There is not strong communication or alignment between management. This is something that is known yet Applied Mgt has not addressed this issue.

Pros

Applied Materials has a reputation for being a leader in the industry. They have good benefits, a professional atmosphere and the company makes an attempt for employee work/ life balance (on site dry cleaning, car wash, work from home, etc). It was a good place to develop professionally when manufacturing was in US. The solar side of business will provide this opportunity now.

Cons

Very lean environment creating challenges at all levels. Out sourcing over the years has led to job eliminations and the lean environment on the semiconductor side. Lean environment causes work /life balance issues for those with a life!
