Pros

* used to attract brightest and the best in the human rights field - some are still there, but many have left in recent years * resources to do whatever you want * a well-known brand that opens lots of doors

Cons

* high salaries of some - eg £200k + for SG - mean people might be attracted for the wrong reasons * organisation has been through huge change in recent years - at a cost of millions of pounds and a loss of experienced staff who held significant institutional memory - for what gains * organisation seems incapable of getting rid staff who seriously under-perform while still drawing big salaries, when faced with possibility of negative publicity * unclear what direction the organisation is headed - trying to cover too many areas * too little accountability for how money is spent, bearing in mind money comes from the general public

Pros

- Some amazing people who care about what they do, are brilliant at what they do and cause real positive change. - Learn a lot which will advance your thinking in work and life. - Made some friends for life and was able to feel like I made an impact, which was no easy feat.

Cons

- A bureaucratic place to work which is highly political and very, VERY slow moving. Innovation and change take a very long time with lots of middle managers and red tape. - A lack of appreciation and value in great staff members mean a lot of people have come and gone, which, if treated better, needn't have been the case. Appreciation then seems to come as a reactive, when it is already too late than proactively and organically. - Work/life balance is next to none. Your work can hardly ever be completed within work hours and I hardly ever left feeling satisfied I'd achieved what I needed to in my day. - Dysfunctional teams and real bullying are left unchecked, especially by Senior Leadership Team. - Seems there's always a hidden agenda. Nothing is transparent or feels it can be taken at face value.

Pros

People SEEM to care. You feel good about the idea of helping others. At first you feel welcomed and like you can make a change, which is not really the case.

Cons

Everything. The leader of my team herself was two faced. She was always late, talked about others behind their back and wasn't professional with her judgements at all. Her energy was clearly of jealousy, I assume she felt threatened when there's a chance of others being better than her. So she manipulates management, she's been there long enough to gain their trust. Most employees on my team had been there no longer than four weeks. Management sucks, leaders suck and contributions aren't fairly distributed. You pay out of your own pocket for transport everywhere in NYC while this nonprofit organization's ceo makes 210k a year.
