Pros

Helping people in disasters is what this work is all about. Many significant opportunities for volunteers as well as staff. Great free training for both as well. Served as my entry into emergency management career.

Cons

The sensitivity, caring, and helpfulness administered to clients (disaster survivors) often does not extend to staff - paid or volunteer.

Pros

If you are in a large market area, including any major city, you'll get valuable training and experience that will help you get another job in the future

Cons

Massive layoffs have left the company severely understaffed. You will have responsibilities and goals that you can't possibly meet. Luckily local management is pretty understanding of this, but you'll still be trying to meet crazy goals with little support. Salary? You'll probably be paid at about 50% of market value. Seriously. I left the Red Cross and immediately doubled my salary. It's a disaster

Pros

Very rewarding job knowing all the Blood your Territory collects will be used to save lives. It is also great working with all the Volunteer at Churches, Businesses, Schools. Great Co-workers.

Cons

Management has made this a very bad place to work. Excessive goals and cutting staffing days before blood drives and unwilling to adjust goals down to make goals/bonus attainable. Most of my former co-workers are very unhappy and would love to find other employment. Turnover of collection is at an all time high.
