Pros

The American Red Cross has a noble mission which it delivers much like the postal service--in any weather (physical, political and financial). There's always name recognition when I tell people where I work.

Cons

Lack of accountability from senior management to hourly workers; over-analyzing everything; inability to empower staff to make their own decisions so we have to go up to the senior vice president sometimes for a routine question;

Pros

Overall Mission and dedication of line staff is inspiring. These people keep the organization going despite the mismanagement at the top. As in any organization people resist change, but in this case it is warranted because the proposed changes are usually ill informed.

Cons

Revolving top management continues to disappoint, with decreasing competence. Significant change is required to save the business, and new regimes fail to study the situation before they enact solutions, which are always misdirected. Any employee with any seniority is seen as part of the problem, and therefore is discounted, ignored or displaced.

Pros

The mission is great -- collecting blood to be used to help ill or injured people is noble. Preparing for and responding to disasters, locally and nationally, is necessary and provides a lot of joy and satisfaction to people who really need the assistance.

Cons

The Human Resources leadership at the national headquarters is poor. The SVP is a lawyer who has no prior direct HR experience and the VP for Biomedical Services HR is a former Training and Education/OD consultant with no other HR experience. Between the two of them, HR is in chaos. Employee morale is low, turnover is high and employee recognition and work life balance is bad.
