Pros

Largest relief agency in America with $billions of assets. Humanitarian motivation among many volunteers. Political, logistical and financial support from DOD, FEMA, White House, and some major corporations.

Cons

Lack of leadership, management skills, vision, humanitarian focus. Evidence of long-term patterns of malfeasance, discrimination and even corruption. Lack of recourse within organization to employees who protest, wish to resolve problems or seek redress. Deep structural cronyism. Punitive conduct towards those who ask questions or urge reform. Institutional arrogance and inertia. Open exploitation of donors and volunteers with false promises and platitudes. Misallocation of donor monies and volunteer time. Lack of respect for donor and volunteer privacy and confidentiality. Repeated violations of key federal and state regulations. Expensive use of PR to stifle criticism and dodge accountability. Leadership tends to be politically partisan and from right of the political spectrum.

Pros

Location in Washington DC is nice. The people inthe chapter organisations are highly motivated and it is fun and worthwhile to engage them. As a volunteer organization, the Red Cross does an excellent job of keeping the chapter volunteers engaged. These people really provide the true public face of the organization. The Red Cross also has reasonable benefits compared with other non-profit volunteer organizations. The Red Cross also provides a higher pay rate for IT professionals (although this does not always translate into recruiting better candidates). The Red Cross also has some great events such as the annual chapter conference.

Cons

Performance goes unrewarded while incompetence is overlooked. Management has a lot of C and D players that tend to recruit other C and D players. Several key exectutives are grossly unqualified and lack basic management and leadership skills. There is a lot of nepotism and favoritism to go around. Employee morale is very low when I left, but has only become worse since then as the organization was forcewd to lay off 30 per cent ot headquarters staff. Unfortunately, even this opportunity did not clean house of the those individuals that should have been let go as too much dead wood is still afloat within the irganization.

Pros

As a social service agency it is a great place to work. Helping people in times of emergency is very gratifying. Teaching people how to prepare for emergencies and how to help save a life is a life long skill that many do not forget. Getting that emergency message to a soldier station overseas eases the distance crisis that families face. To work for the Red Cross you must believe in the mission and base your work and actions on the mission. The Red Cross is known nation wide as well as world wide. Only one other logo is more recognized than the Red Cross. It is very gratifying to say, "I am from the Red Cross and I am here to help you."

Cons

Working with management at National Headquarters. they soar at 35K feet and do not get to see the real work that goes on. They depend on statistics for a basis of results. They employ outside agencies to write and review Red Cross programs and do not use the knowledge that is in the chapters.
