Not as innovative as advertised: gridlocked

Pros

Lots of new grads with lots of energy. Being able to say you work with robotic software, hardware, and analytics is cool. Having worked at AR opens doors at other companies.

Cons

Amazon Robotics has adopted Amazon’s extremely Seattle-centric perspective: decisions need to go through people in Seattle. Scarce leadership and management training doesn’t provide the young front-line managers with the tools they need to effectively manage the very young employees. Like the management style, tech development is often seat-of-the-pants, with people using intuition instead of sound algorithm, software or engineering principles. While this could all lead to a fun, dynamic environment in a smaller place without cross-country oversight from a large corporation, AR has grown to the point that the resulting employee churn and lack of opportunities is making it stagnate.

Pros

commute is dumb easy. the technology at work is easy, simple.

Cons

Office space is overly crowded and noisy. The office air quality not good. Restroom smells. Every morning, the daily status report meeting is a very bad management practice. Managers like to call engineers for too many meetings, not much time left for really working on technical task. Too many BS mandatory meetings for engineers, feels waste of time.

Female Engineers Beware

Pros

Free soda and cereal, in office cafeteria, ping pong, smart people, interesting and challenging products are being developed, decent compensation, generous maternity and paternity leave

Cons

AR gives a lot of lip service to promoting the careers of women and I think at one point this was true. Since the female COO left the company things have really changed. There has been a mass exodus of women and there are VERY few women left in technical leadership roles. Women have routinely been referred to by management as "not technical enough" and "not REAL engineers" despite their education, qualifications, and significant contributions to the company. These comments are verbatim and I have heard them used first hand by members of the management team. New positions and opportunities are not posted, rather people are "tapped on the shoulder" for these roles, meaning that women (or anyone else interested) are not able to apply for them. In the most recent reorg, 13 new and expanded roles were announced. ALL of them went to men.
