Pros

Great products Broadly intelligent staff Mostly friendly, if not helpful peers Ability to WFH - but frankly you'll be working so much you'll have to work from home whether you want to or now

Cons

Zero transparency about almost everything Strict hierarchy that disctates essentially whose opinions matter even if you're an expert and have done the research Unable to make a decision on anything even if it's just common sense without 15 pages of data Content decision made by finance and marketing not creative staff Levels are completely out of whack with some people in the same role having 4-5 years experience and other 10-15 Long hours, unrealistic expectations and non-stop fire drills Culture is awful. Zero work life balance and senior staff hired into the company are it seems made to purposely feel terrible. Constant focus on recruiting due to churn (though they call it constant growth) self-service culture is just a way to make you work harder - do your job and that of two other people and also do all of your IT, admin, travel, expenses etc. on your own time. IT equipment is so terrible you end up having to buy your own if you actually need to get real work done Company is utterly bottlenecked by decision-making being done directly by Bezos and Bezos alone. Crazy as a former Facebook, Google and NBCU employee. No communication between different teams to a comical level Way too much emphasis on Netflix

Pros

$10/hr. Have some down time. If you get stuck or don't know what to do, there is opportunity for your question to get answered on team group chat. Training was thorough, although very long and a bit overwhelming

Cons

Sometimes you get stuck with a terrible manager who doesn't care about your success. Managers rotate constantly and you will end up in a new team just as you're making friends with your current one and the momentum is good. The equipment they gave us (headset) is difficult to work because the directions for set up were not easy to understand. Days had passed before I was able to make a complete call. Reached out to lead plenty of times for help, but sometimes they're so busy helping others your question gets overlooked. The hours are strenuous. They tell you that you can "pick your schedule" and have flexibility but for a college student, it's pretty much impossible to stay sane. Your schedule must be the same shift the each day 5 days in a row. I literally worked from 12pm-12am 4 days a week! Then wake up and go to class 8am the next morning. This is not an ideal job for someone who isn't working extremely long hours on the computer. You will literally drive yourself crazy. You begin to feel like a robot. Customers are so angry and pissed at you for something that you can't control, it's just company policy. Then we get the blame because a customer may leave negative feedback. $10 a hour is a joke for this position. We should be getting paid at least $13 for the amount of dedication and work that is required for this job. 10% off discount is a JOKE! What is 10% really going to do? This was my first work from home experience, and I expected it to be a bit more.

Pros

Great stepping stone as they hire anyone they can right out of the university. Adopt leadership skills Experience high pressure environment Learn how bureaucracy works within Amazon

Cons

Let's be honest, the retention rate for Area Manager role is pathetically low and there is a reason behind it. Don't be fooled by the large amount of signing bonus, it is simply a way to trap you with money. The offer letter stated that working hours are 10 hours a day and 4 days a week, yep! 40 hours sounds pretty good eh? WRONG! You will never experience anything less than 60 hours a week. Be ready to work 14+ hours a day and 5~6 days straight when your facility calls you in for the mandatory overtime. Yeah, enjoy working additional 14~30+ hours of UNPAID mandatory overtime with nothing in return. This will happen throughout the entire year! You will most likely not learn any technical knowledge, but to tell your Associates work "faster" and “faster”. This role is purely people management, it has nothing to do with real world operation or even supply chain management. All you would do is moving people from one path to another trying to balance the number. With that being said, it is hard to transition your role into something else in the future, because you simply won’t be able to build any relevant skill sets! Work life balance does not exist in Amazon. Imagine after working 12+ hours a day you go home eat, sleep and return to work, do that for 12 months. Amazon will give you endless tasks with lots of stress and bureaucracy. Upper Management team simply don't care about associates, all they see are workers tagged with number, rate, and %. You are the one to decide whether or not it is worth it sell your soul, family, friend, weekend, hobbies, and vacation time in exchange for such an underpay position with long work hours. The career opportunity for this role is strictly limited to Operation, the chance of internal transfer from FC to corporate is slim.
