Pros

The benefits are great. Lateral moves are definitely available. Various events were offerred to employees annually. (Part of the benefit package)

Cons

Advancement is ridiculous and management does not demonstrate the business mission. It's almost impossible to exceed expectations since it is required someone has to be graded less than expected or inconsistent even after putting in many hours and going over and beyond. Fairness has been a big issue for many years. Education is highly recommended internally online by company and ongoing education is difficult externally. Annual training is mandatory to meet company mission statement but they are not enforced.

Pros

Great benefits; flexible work hours for many positions. Subsidized employee medical and dental; 401K match and pension; onsite pharmacy and clinic at home office (Northbrook IL); concierge services (dry cleaning, shoe repair, men's barbershop, onsite oil change.) Some employees (e.g., HR, Procurement) able to work remotely.

Cons

Fear-based, extremely hierarchical culture. Smart people left out of key meetings so officers and directors can spin message to curry favor with those above them, whether facts support the spin or not. Money wasted on worthless pet projects and huge bonus/salary increases to CEO could move company forward if the truth ever reached the top and smart people were kept on staff. Other issue: Work spaces keep shrinking - some work in pods of 6 - 8 employees. Very noisy.

Pros

Had an excellent culture of employees and opportunity. Was a great place to learn.

Cons

It used to be an honor to work here. Then Sears spun us off into its own Shareholder-owned company in 1995. Slowly the great loyal company with many long-term employees began to slide downhill to the mess it is today. Employees became like bodies working on the pyramids. The old timers got targets on their back and let go methodically but they made it look good by laying a few younger ones too. Others would get fired for minor infractions. Experience didn't mean anything anymore. You made too much, get out. Raises were pretty much non-existent. Outsourcing got to be the norm. We don't need American employees! Benefits began to suffer too. To survive you had to suck up to middle-management who had no clue. It is a shame to see what happened here.
