Pros

Atmosphere, people, salary and benefits. Having a health clinic on campus was great so that you didn't have to take so much time out to go see your doctor for something minor. Great workout facility. Somewhat of a good cafeteria.

Cons

The merge with Novartis has really hurt Alcon, employees who have been there for years are seeing changes that aren't that great but new comers don't know the difference. Alcon use to be a great family oriented place to work but all that has changed. Upper management may tell you that they are working hard for you and trying to do the best they can for you but it's not all true, management only wants what is good for them and when they recieve their bonus they are happy. I would say that some of the wrong people have been laid off in the past 5 years, people that know their job, do a great job, don't goof off on the job are some of the ones laid off but there are still employees there that have been in so much trouble with HR, are close to retirement age, goof off most of the time that are still with the company. It's really a shame that the people they lay off did so much work and were dedicated to the job and now 4-5 people are doing that one job and don't know what they are doing.

Pros

Great compensation and benefit. Also alcon has a good sense of purpose.

Cons

Specifically want to share about my organization QRA. Working in QRA- it's like being stuck in a slow line at your favorite coffee shop, but instead of coffee, it's paperwork and endless waiting. Everyone's playing a game of "yes-man" bingo, and if you're not nodding along, you're not winning. Ever tried speaking up or shooting down a wild idea? Forget about it. That's the fast track to nowhere, especially after QA and RA became BFFs. It's gotten so bad that a lot of the good folks have already quit. I miss the good old RA days when we could openly contribute our ideas. Now, it's like there's a secret club, and the only way to talk to the big bosses is through your manager. It's a whole new level of silly. I feel that culture flows top to bottom, after the departure of our RA SVP, culture has drastically changed for the worse. It breaks my heart writing this because i once really loved working here not so anymore

Pros

Free contacts, but the overall benefits decreased each year. They are getting rid of the EPO plan, which was the best for large families with lots of medical expenses. When I started working at Alcon in 2018, my eye insurance premiums covered my check up at $0 copay. The last time I had a check up even going to an in network doctor it was a $50 copay with my eye insurance from an eye company.

Cons

Alcon is diverse because it’s an international company, but the leadership does not reflect that diversity. Nor do we see that diversity reflected in leadership. They also hate people wanting to work from home. Alcon’s Covid approach was poor. Their workforce is already exhibiting lots of Long Covid symptoms. Due to all of the silos at Alcon, you can have a vastly different experience here just based on your team. During training we watched a video Alcon made about twins who vastly different experiences at Alcon. One had a crappy manager, one did not. Looking back it was a huge red flag for me about my experiences with this company. They know the problems they have, but they refuse to address them with long time employees who make the environment toxic. Alcon has an outsized market share of the eye products industry, and it won’t surprise me if J&J or Allergan come for it post Covid. Especially with middle managers driving away fresh talent.
