Pros

Smaller Big Box company with opportunity for growth

Cons

Generally closed minded to new ideas and vendors. All power lies with the buying group. A lot of backstabbing amongst upper level management. Large power struggles and inexperienced management. Very "redneck" mentality. If you did not learn retail at this company, you are considered an outsider.

Business Analysts Beware

Business Outlook

Pros

Tram to transport employees from the parking lot to the front door. Friendly drivers.

Cons

Highly unstructured organization. Organizational chart changes every day, due to high turnover rates. All parts of the company still operate as if it is 1982. All departments are resistant to change. There is corporate 'talk' of faciliating change, but Business Analysts are left on their own to fight with the Business for current business processes and business requirements. Business Analysts do the work of at least 3 people. Since the company does not follow its own SDLC, the analyst is expect it to perform all parts as well as lead the project. Do not expect Project Management to know anything more about the project than the project name and number. Salary is extremely low for the work you are expected to do. There is no mentorship, no guideline and no one to refer to for true Academy knowledge. Not even a great stamp on your resume. Highly stressful environment. There are only 2 Business Analysts who have been here for more than a year (out of 30).

Pros

Employee discounts, and especially used when traveling to different states with Academy stores; Ease of training for departments via one internal system program; flexible hours with school (to an extent)

Cons

Tuition assistance is only available to classes deemed "business-related" instead of it being a standard flat rate for all students; connectivity services (telephone & internet) is not up to speed to where it needs to be to find critical information to customers; temperature is not regulated at a store level (explanation from managers at our store); problems within intranet between corporate and store level;
