Pros

You can make good money if you learn the products you're selling well, and can handle the highly competitive, and at times toxic work environment around you.

Cons

Abt runs its ship, and primarily sales staff in a very old school, traditionalist way. If you want any opportunities of moving up into higher positions, you either have to put in some hard time (at least 1-2 years) and build a reputation with others in the store. Otherwise, you can expect to stay where you're at for quite some time. The whole store, and its individual departments all have their own internal socio-political quirks as well. Because of the way things like paychecks are taboo to be discussed within your department, and the fragility of the bonus system (you can often lose your whole bonus at once for things you are not even at fault for), no matter the department, expect it to be HIGHLY competitive. To a degree this is healthy, but you will definitely see it get toxic at times as well. If you're someone who prefers to keep their head down, clock into work, and not engage in internal conversations around politics or otherwise personal conversations, expect to leave that idea at the door entirely. During my experience working at Abt, I've been thrown into these conversations at random and unwanted times - even by one of the CEO brothers. Additionally, in the day to day, I've overheard countless sexist, racist, transphobic, xenophobic comments made about both customers and other employees. While most of the time intended as a joke, the non-stop exposure to this behavior made my motivation to come in each day lower and lower throughout my time. I would liken my own department's specific behavior to a high school experience: everyone is talking about everyone else behind their backs, while nice face to face. Primarily, I think the competitive and relational constructs this company bases its employees on contribute to this most. Managers will many times turn the other cheek towards their own department's toxicity because the drama and competition generates more money, making they themselves more favorable to upper management. Overall, everybody is looking out for their own best interests, which makes sense and is also healthy in a sense - but where this becomes unhealthy is how this naturally dissuade's teamwork. As a whole, this was not an employment experience I walked away from with many positive memories, depending on who you are, you may feel differently and enjoy your time here. But this job was certainly not for me at the end of the day.

We cannot stress enough that we always promote from within. With that said, of course you will need to put in some "hard time" to be promoted. The bonus fund was designed as an incentive, is discretionary and is in addition to your hourly & commission earnings. Most employees love the extra money. Yes, we are extremely busy but most employees thrive off of our fast paced work environment. Abt is proud to have a diverse workforce. We do not tolerate harrassment or discrimination against any employees due to their actual or perceived age, race, color, national origin/ancestry, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, marital status, physical or mental disability, past or current service in the military or other characteristics protected by State or Federal law. If you were to ask our staff their favorite thing about working at Abt, the overwhelming majority would agree it is our friendly, family culture.

Pros

Decent pay, they keep the place clean

Cons

Poor management, high school like atmosphere, married managers sleeping with married coworkers, favoritism. The list goes on and on. They fire good employees at the drop of a hat, with the phrase “ it’s just not working out “

While our friendly, family culture may not be for everyone, the overwhelming majority of our employees would list it as one of their favorite parts of working here. Almost all of our managers have grown with the company, and been promoted from within, a claim many companies make, but few deliver on. Many of our employees have met their spouse/partner here over the years and we do not make a point of interfering in the lives of two consenting adults. "Favoritism" is shown to employees who do their best to make our customers happy and who excel in their work. If you were let go as a salesperson, it was for failing in one or both of those areas.

Abt is a family-owned and operated business. We are accommodating and understanding with time off and vacation requests. However, working at Abt can be fast paced and demanding, which is not for everyone. The majority of our staff is happy with the amount of hours they work versus the alternative of being laid off and unemployed. We are proud to say we have never had a layoff in 85 years of business.
