Pros

Turnover at the entry-level positions is very high, which makes for a good opportunity to get some lab experience under your belt and go after a better job.

Cons

ALS has been on an ambitious Growth-by-Acquisition bender for a number of years. They target a lab with solid QA/QC structures and culture of quality, purchase it, and then start making outlandish demands in regards to ROS and profitability. CAS labs is a case in point - formerly a renowned facility and paragon of quality, now part of the ALS borg. Labs that were built with hard work over many years are turned overnight into complete sweatshops. Since it is a publicly traded corporation, short-term profitability is the name of the game. The drumbeat of "how much can we bill this month" trumps EVERYTHING else. Mid to long term planning is out the door. If you've read the comic strip "Dilbert", then you have an idea of what passes for logic. When hired, you will be viewed as a piece of livestock, not expected to stay more than a year or two.

Poor company to work for

Pros

Listed company always looks good on a CV

Cons

Lack of direction and drive - no leadership what so ever and working within the environment itself was stale and impersonal. I was there for just over a year and barely got any guidance or direction from management. It was probably the worst year of my life and the feeling of inadequacy and lack of professional development was depressing. It was funny, when I did finally resign, no one really cared and even my direct manager did not even take me to a farewell lunch or even organise a card... heartless and soulless organisation with poor pay.... after working there for over a year, they went through some huge 'salary review framework' which took months and months of time... at the end of it, I was offered CPI even though the organisation had performed incredibly well... all the general managers of the business got $100k plus bonuses....

Pros

The co-workers are very nice. Nice break room.

Cons

Every man for themselves atmosphere, career advancements taken away based on company needs, management rewards bad behavior, no training, old outdated instruments, no bonuses, cheap.
