I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Teach for America (Pittsburgh, PA) in Jul 2015
Interview
The interview was about the same as everyone else here. The one difference that I experienced was a black woman saying that they like to hire those who "closely represent the people they serve." As a white man, I took this to me they don't like to hire people like me. It didn't matter that I came from a poor family in a poor city and received reduced lunches as a child. It didn't matter that I had a graduate degree and years of ESL teaching under my belt. It didn't matter that I worked for large international corporations, and I still decided to serve my country in this way. All she cared about was what I looked like. This organization might have some great people, but I met someone who seemed intent on treating me different based on my skin color and her uneducated assumptions. This was a few years ago, so I hope the organization changed this kind of behavior.
