I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Opendoor (San Francisco, CA) in Jun 2018
Interview
Online coding challenge, then onsite. The onsite was short and easy (meaning the hiring bar for this company is very low!). There were so many red flags throughout my interview process: the interviewers look sad and unhappy when talking about their experience. The interview scheduling was absolutely stupid and terrible. The HR behaved like a bunch of rude, aggressive car salesmen (!) and had no clue what they are doing. The hiring manager attempted to convince me that the company, which is in the business of buying apartments, holding for some period of time, then reselling, has very little business risk (???). Too many junior engineers in the company, so a new hire probably won't learn that much. They are also hiring like crazy (someone told me they doubled the size of the engineering team in the last 6 months), so I'm sure there will be even more junior engineers. After the interview, I happened to meet someone who quit the company after four months. Welp. Got the offer, but turned it down very fast afterwards!
P/S: The Glassdoor reviews of this company look pretty good at first glance, but filter for Software Engineer reviews and see what they say!
Failed at HR call. Profile might not be that much match, they are looking for backend leaning role but I did more front end works instead. HR might not look up my resume carefully.
I applied in-person. I interviewed at Opendoor (Seattle, WA) in Oct 2025
Interview
Very easy and straightforward very nice people enjoyed the conversation that we had a lot and benefitted a lot from it so I would thank them for that
Overall the interview is structured and chill and straightforward with a pretty laid back vibe
I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Opendoor
Interview
There was a phone screen which was followed by an onsite interview with 4-5 interviews, some technical, others behavioral. It was interesting that they included some ML-based questions in the SWE interview. Afterward, I heard back pretty quickly.
