      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at New York Life (Glendale, CA) in Nov 2023

      Interview

The interview process was 3 separate interviews in total! The first one was a basic over the phone interview where they asked me some very basic questions. They seemed thrilled by my answers and emphasised at the end that I’m the perfect role for this position! The second interview was with a different person and over zoom! It was more or less the same as the first one with the addition of some more questions! At the end they said they want to hire me and want me to have my final interview with the hiring manager. The final interview was on zoom with the hiring manager. It went on for a bit longer than the second one but went very well. I was just explained what the job entailed, how many resources I have to take advantage of, the license I need to acquire and the further licenses I will need to get in the future aswell as how I would be compensated. I was told that I was going to be paid a salary and that if I accomplished all my daily tasks and everything they asked of me I would receive a bonus ! I was told if I worked hard, did what I was asked of and completed all my tasks I would be paid around 60k a year. What they failed to mention was that before I even got paid anything I had to make 3k in commission, provide insurance to 3-5 different households and have 10 appointments before they would even trigger my contract. I spent 45 days coming to the office multiple times a week, making calls, trying to get referrals! Which all lead to nothing. I was supposed to reach out to my initial market which is friends and family. The problem is I’m not from the United States nor do I have family here. I didn’t grow up here either so I didn’t have a lot of people to reach out to in the first place. I was told that it was up to me to find people to call and sell insurance to. Of course I had to spend my own money if I wanted to buy leads or anything else that would help me get leads. I spent money trying to buy leads, I started getting involved in my community and spent countless hours trying to get leads. After the 45 days they just let me go and told me good luck. It was never communicated to me that I wouldn’t even be able to start working and getting paid under a contract without making those initial sales. Sure it doesn’t seem like much to someone born in this country who has friends and family to reach out to and sell insurance to but i unfortunately did not have that. It was also not communicated that this was 100% a commission job. If you don’t make a certain amount of sales per month they will end your contract. I was told this was a job where I would get a salary and it’s okay if I have a slow start and that if I do everything they say It will magically work itself out but that wasn’t the case! 9 out of 10 agents quit within 6 months is what I was told by others. From the time I started working there until the last day I saw people leave just in my own small circle of people that my hiring manager hired which consisted of 10 people! Out of those 10, 2 people left in the 45 days I was there.
