I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Marshalls (Nashville, TN) in Jun 2014
Interview
Incredibly simple. I spoke with a sales associate about my desire to work here, and she encouraged me to take an application from the table they had set up. I met with a manager within 30 minutes of having filled out the form, and we had a one-on-one interview. I had not brought my resume with me, as I hadn't anticipated applying or interviewing for anything, but the interview wasn't hampered by my surprise. It was a pretty easy conversation, and I don't recall any of the questions catching me off-guard. He was understanding of my schedule, and I would later find that Marshalls offers insanely flexible hours.
Despite having completed the application, I needed one form to be signed by a legal guardian- I returned to the store within a few days, dropped the form off, and got a call later in the week with a time and date for me to appear for training. Very simple process and not that stressful.

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Marshalls (Pomona, CA) in Sep 2011
Interview
Pretty easy as long as you're truthful. I knew one of the new managers so I was comfortable with her in the room. Since I have never had a job I referenced activities and events I participated in during high school to show I did have some experience with customer service. When asked what fruit would I be and why (asked a large group of us toward the end) people were saying these exotic fruits because they are exotic or hard to find. So to be different I said a chocolate filled apple because although I can be sweet and sour on the outside I am very sweet deep down.
When working retail, you have to make yourself stand out so the best thing is to embrace your inner "weirdness" (to a certain extent) and make your job a fun environment. I have been at the same store for 3 years mainly because of the people I am blessed to work with.
