The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Forever 21 (Los Angeles, CA) in May 2012
Interview
I showed up, had an interviewed with the DM and visual merchandiser. The DM was the one asking questions and pretty much catered the questions to my resume and experience. She asked questions like "where I get my ideas for merchandising from" and "what trends do I think will be big for summer". After the interview I was told to pick out three outfits in 20 min. Each outfit was of a different trend. This included clothes, accessories, shoes, handbags, everything. After the 20 min. I met up with her in the back and talked to her about why I chose the items I did and explain the outfits.
I had an interview with a diff. visual merchandiser in a diff. mall that same day and the interview process was kinda the same but 10 times easier. Just had to pick one outfit and that was it. I got that one, but it was too far away from where I lived so decided to turn it down.
The pay isn't that good either... It was around $12-13/hr.

Interview
1st Interview: Interview given by store manager.
I walked into the store and presented the store manager with my resume and portfolio. She had time to chat with me, so we moved by the window mannequins to chat. Basically I was asked general questions on past employers and my fashion education. I presented a portfolio of all my past work through college, as well as from past employers. I gave specific examples on how I executed various visual work, as well on knowledge on key fashion trends at the time. I was asked to return later on in the week to interview with the visual manager of another store, since my actual visual manager was unable to do it. Everything went really well.
2nd Interview: Interview given by Visual Manager from another store.
I was asked various fashion related questions, and to explain some of my favorites. I was also asked to come up with 5 looks pertaining to a certain type of girl. I had free reign of anything in the store and had to include a customer bio, as well as explain each look in detail to the visual manager. I also had to merchandise various fixtures, as well as build 4 face-outs. Interview went really really well. I wish I had worked under this manager instead.

Interview
From my previous review, I was a former sales associate interviewing to become a visual merchandiser. After weeks of dogging management I got an interview with the visual manager, who asked me very serious questions regarding the job, and a rigorous skill test of assembling outfits. she said she'd contact me a week later. she didn't, so I went into the store to find her and follow up, and she said she'd schedule me an interview with the field visual manager over the weekend for that Monday and she'd call. she didn't call again, turns out she was sick. I went in the next few days and luckily the field visual manager was there the second day, so I talked to her directly and scheduled an interview for the next week. the interview with her was especially pleasant, she was really easygoing and asked me questions about how I got along with management and co-workers alike when I worked here, and how I would do things differently. I particularly enjoyed the interview, I left with a good feeling. she asked me what I thought about being an accessory specialist, to which I replied I could do it. I knew she was actually considering me for a job when she asked this question. Like I said in my previous review, they are in desperate need for visuals, AND accessory specialists. I just heard back from the visual manager today, who offered me a position as a full time accessory specialist. after 2 months of persistence I finally have a job offer.
All in all, go for it only if you really want to. Retail in itself is very grueling and relatively unprofessional compared to other jobs. I will say one thing, it taught me how to be deliberate, confident, and tenacious, which are all very valuable skills for when you're job hunting.
