I applied in-person. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Dollar General in May 2011
Interview
Applied on line, was given assessment test on line within a few days, interview set up a few days later. The whole process was very fast. The interview was done by a very enthusiasic person who obviously loves his job and the company, The assessment test is timed, so be prepared to take it without any interuptions. For the math part, of course, no calculators are allowed, but I would have been lost without a scratchpad! The test is also fairly long, so be prepared to set a time to take it when you know you won't have ANY distractions.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Dollar General (Kansas City, MO) in Apr 2011
Interview
This was for a Store Manager In Training position, where, once accepted, you are paid $12(!) an hour while you wait for someone to quit so you can become Store Manager. At a store someone just quit from. Nice.
Sent in my resume with a few questions at the online site. Received an invitation to take the "Prove It!" screening online. The Prove it thing is a timed IQ and personality test where your response time to each question is noted. So if it asks you if you've ever broken a rule, and you answer no in 1/2 second, then later you are asked if you've ever got a speeding ticket and you answer no in like 3 minutes, they probably have a problem with you. The IQ portion begins unexpectedly, but two of the problems are impossible, just to see if you really are the type of person who does not give up on a task (Question #2)
Was contacted by a nice woman within 15 minutes of taking the test and asked to schedule time for an interview over the phone. Phone interview primarily consisted of her telling me that it is a worthwhile company, but also situational questions, the ones below were pretty typical for me too.
At the end, scheduled time to meet with a Regional Manager.
