I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Dec 2015
Interview
I applied on Amazon's career website. The process took a little longer than 2 weeks. The phone interview focuses solely on behavioral questions. The behavioral questions they ask matches with the 10 leadership principles on Amazon's website. I had a hard time understanding the interviewer.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Jan 2016
Interview
I initially was contacted by a recruiter for Amazon Operations which manages local distribution centers for an opportunity in my local area, but expressed interest in a role that would be in Seattle as a priority. I had 3 initial phone screens for a role in Seattle, but it was filled before I had an opportunity to do an onsite interview.
Next, I had another 2 phone screens for 2 other roles in Seattle. After these interviews I was contacted and told that I would have an onsite interview in January 2016. The onsite interview consisted of 5 back to back interviews with 4 of the 5 consisting of 1:1 interviews with either the finance manager for the role, or one on a similar team. The fifth interview was a 2-on-1 bar-raiser interview. Overall the questions were all behavioral and each one focused on 1 or 2 of their "Leadership Principles." After answering the question the interviewer dived deeper into the response to get more information.
About 1 week later I was told that I was a good fit for Amazon, but not the specific role and would offer me another role at a lower level (and compensation) instead. At Amazon they have 3 options after an onsite interview, offer for the current position, reject the candidate entirely, or offer the candidate a lower level position. I decided to accept the lower level position to see if the opportunity was still within my desired range.
Overall, I feel neutral about the experience. The process at Amazon took a very long time, but everyone I spoke with was courteous and helpful throughout.
