Pros

There was a great purpose to the company. Enabling people to run their own non-traditional businesses was very fulfilling. Pierre's vision of building a marketplace where anybody could participate was incredibly motivating. Hearing him talk about his objective and how it came to pass really gave you a sense that you were working on something bigger than you were, and that it mattered.

Cons

People were seen as secondary to getting the work finished. While there was a push eventually to recognize the individual, it never seemed to permeate the culture. At times, it definitely felt like you were working to deadlines, rather than trying to achieve the best outcome. I think that you're now seeing the results of some of that, as eBay is being eclipsed by smaller, younger companies on the web.

Pros

eBay is a fast paced, large company that in a lot of ways still has its start up mentality. Some days there 's endless red tape to go through and other days we can stop on a dime and change directions. Everyone who works at eBay is dedicated, I have yet to meet anyone who we have to cover for. When faced with difficult tasks or projects, it is truly inspiring to watch everyone pitch in and power through whatever is in the way. In the past few years, management has encouraged its employees to have good balance between work and personal life. This really has made a big difference for everyone.

Cons

eBay will work you, there are no slackers at eBay. The work environment is intense, the moment you enter the office til the moment you leave, there is stuff to do. If can't mulitask, you won't do well.

Pros

You'll learn from the market leader in eCommerce, auctions, online payments, classifieds and VOIP communications

Cons

You'll be worked very hard - eBay is known for working their employees to submission. The salary/bonus and perks compensation is not par with industry in Silicon Valley either. Many people leave eBay for Yahoo, Google or comparable sized companies and instantly get a 20% bump in their salary, usually for a lateral job. Job titles are inconsistent here, often deflated. It's hard to get promoted. Politics is terrible too, and management isn't stongly versed in new trends on the internet. Technologists don't get much respect or say in things because management doesn't understand it. Truly old company management.
