Pros

As both someone who has been promoted and promoted others, I've found that good folks get promoted up to a certain level based on the merits of their work. eBay obviously has nice facilities, cafeteria and all that. And I personally love the mission of PayPal, the branch I work for -- to be a global currency.

Cons

Once you're promoted past a certain level, promotions tend to be much more political. Probably not something exclusive to eBay, but it's not a great thing to experience. Also, frequently, someone of questionable merit gets promoted and that compromises the integrity of the process. Warring factions sometime create lack of role clarity which leads to a tremendous waste of time, time that could be spent on moving the business forward. Lastly, there's a significant trend toward "alpha male" executives which feeds the "warring factions" feeling.

Pros

There is a lot to learn with eBay, you get to work with a lot of interesting people in the company and a diverse base of customers, great benefits, and a varied and fun work environment. There are more attempts to make communication within the company better but it is still mediocre. The work done with eBay is meaningful; you are helping people to run their businesses, helping with strategy and functionality of the site. Unlike many other phone centers, the work can, at times, be more consulting rather than a collections or sales atmosphere. eBay allows employees to focus on what’s best for the member rather than what will make eBay money. It’s good to work with a company like that.

Cons

It is a large company and frequently changes are made without properly informing employees or giving tools or forethought to the details of the changes. Within the company, information and reasoning is frequently confidential, hidden without specific reasons explained as to why certain policies and procedures exist or don’t exist. This can make resolving a problem difficult. There is also very little information given about future goals and vision, large changes are made giving a heads up only days in advance. The company is attempting to strengthen its position in a reactive manner by trying to become more like competition which ultimately makes changes frequent.
