Pros

Job Security. This is a company mostly run by pharmacists. Walgreens does pay very well. We tend to have the most advanced software in the pharmacy world. Pharmacists are treated very well.

Cons

Poor decisions made by upper level staff that doesnt make sense in a real world situation but looks good on paper. Upper level management tends to make decisions that do not really fit or work in a real world situation. This is a true cooporation in which the problem lies with cutting you hours, getting more work, then getting asked why the work isnt done. Treat non-pharmacy employees like pawns.

Pros

Good opportunites for becoming a store manager; above average salaries for store managers of retail chain pharmacies, profit sharing is well above industry average with regards to matching. Store technology is overall very good - hiring and training systems, pharmacy management systems, inventory tracking systems are all excellent, with POS systems lagging far behind other retailers. The rumors are the POS systems will be overhauled in the next few years.

Cons

Lack of opportunities above store manager level; preferences for promotion to DM position generally given to minorities and females. The company is still growing at a fast clip but store support is dwindling as the chain grows (i.e. more stores in each district, payroll being cut to dangerous levels, district staff spread too thin among too many stores, etc.). Hourly wages for store staff (clerks, photo techs, and beauty advisors) are very low compared to other retailers but competitive with other drugstore chains. Very hard to attract good talent when all you can offer someone is $7.50/hour. District Managers do not support giving store clerks anything above a 3% yearly raise, so turnover is high.

Pros

With Walgreens being a fast growing company with a new store opening every 20 hours, that means there are that many more store management oppurtunities available every day. From my perspective as an assistant store manager, the overall goal of all managers is to one day become a store manager. Once you reach this level of management you are set. Your job is easy, the hours are nice and the pay is great!

Cons

Retail is just not for everybody. At a store like Walgreens, where the hours are 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the hours as an assistant manager are not very appealing. Very few jobs these days are 9-5, 40 hour a week jobs but as an assistan store manager I worked a very random, inconsistent schedule that will require overnight shifts and consistent night shifts and consistent weekends. From my experience, being a assistant manager at Walgreens can be very detrimental to a marriage or relationship. Almost every manager at my store was either divorced or going through serious problems with their spouse because of the lack of time spent together. Once you become a store manager, life is great, but the road to glory sucks!
