Great Culture, low pay

Pros

I would have been a for-lifer it it hadn't been for the pay. The people, store culture, clothing, overall vibe of the brand resonates with me the most out of any retail job I've held. Generous discount, free shoe certificates for incentives/quality work and the support from my peers was unmatched.

Cons

Pay was far too low, but not the worst I've seen in retail. Things changed on a dime, company layoffs, quick marketing changes with little to no notice/no materials or support for it. Major lack in labor support as well: high amount of freight with no hours to get it done, reprimanded for being off the floor or overusing labor to get it all done, often falling behind timelines and floorset execution because of that with no empathy or understanding from upper management. High expectation selling culture with low or no incentive (no commission, but top performers got better discounts). Vans was/is suffering financially and made a lot of cuts to things that are crucial for store teams to flourish: technology, leadership conference opportunity, labor again.

Something Needs To Change

Pros

My coworkers are for the most part great the Assistant Manager is amazing and the customers are mostly pretty cool! And the employee discount is great.

Cons

The problem is almost everything else. The work load is either literally nothing to do one week and then ridiculously over worked the next few you are expected to work consul markdowns and shipment all while helping customers and running drag. The pay is not very good especially not for the work load we are given. We have a horrible SM who is constantly lying to our DM and does nothing but sit all day. And as a Sales Lead I am expected to be available weekends and three weekdays a week but only given 15 hours tops and am now having my job threatened because I had to take a second job just to make ends meet. It’s quite frankly ridiculous. I thought vans would be a company I could be proud of. But it turns out it’s all corporate and doesn’t actually stand for the authenticity and diversity that it claims.

Pros

50% discount on Vans Amazing helpful team of project managers

Cons

I feel like everyone tread on tip toes at Vans, speaking behind closed doors. Since management changed, there was a a loss of true transparency, authentic community and family as a company, I felt it has lost a sense of authenticity as a Vans family - and was driven more by sales and revenue than relationships & culture. Managers were placed in roles without proper training and don't quite really care about the growth of the person they are being managed - it was more out of "stay out of trouble". Lack of opportunity to grow and scale the company ladder. You will have to be there for a decade.
