Compensation should be higher. Promotions don't always come after great performance. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Pros

Things appear to be changing for the better now that Paul Maritz is in place. He appears to be very open in his communications; he represents the company stronger than Diane Greene ever could. There is a 180 degree difference in their styles. VMware would likely have been wallowing in the gutter if Diane were left steering the goodship VMW. The physical work environment is open; the new campus is beautiful; the cafe is great to have onsite, and the new gym should be yet another welcome way to keep your mind and body healthy. The kitchens in each building are also a nice perk.

Cons

In particular with the QA groups, the environment is massively cliquish; if you're not "in", you're virtually "out". The teams act as mini gangs at times which does not help when trying to accomplish cross functional tasks/projects. The old guard management came from nowhere is certain cases and being promoted just because you had been there a long time was a way of life. If you were friends with one of these old guard, regardless of your talent, you were pretty much guaranteed a promotion to director and beyond. Decision making by these inexperienced directors is laughable at best and criminal in most cases.

Pros

1) Growth creates learning opportunities for those who take the initiatives. There're many people who've moved around different departments / roles several times over the years. Its lacking of process and infrastructure often allow things to get done quickly if you have the guts and creativity. Can be frustrating sometimes however 2) Nice new campus and healthy snacks. Plenty of greens and sunlight. Cafe provides adequate choices. Weekly social gathering 3) Brand recognition. One of the fastest growing company in a hot field. People in the high tech industry in general respect the experience

Cons

1) Very incompetent HR. 2) Management by weekly reports at all level. Managers at every level spent hours every week to produce and "roll-up" these fancy weekly essays, then sent to the same long list of managers. Usually receive 15 - 20 of these a week, but often only have time to read headline. 3) Growing politics. People who are competent and who speak truth get frustrated.
