      Challenging work environment that allows personal growth

      Pros

      The work environment at VMware is challenging but relaxed. You are surrounded by very smart people which keeps you on your toes. Being still a young company VMware has an open decision making process. Being proactive and passionate about your work is appreciated and honored. It's pretty much a go for it environment in which hard work reaps great rewards. The management is good about communicating issues important to the company down to the various levels.

      Cons

      No real downsides, it's a good place to work at. VMware currently suffers a bit from the fast growth in recent years and goes through a period of organizational changes.h

      Pros

      Opportunities to learn something new is incredible. Everyday the interaction with customers brought forth new insight into the product and what it can do. The product also required a broad spectrum of Windows and Linux OS knowledge. Knowing databases, such as Microsoft's SQL or Oracle, is a great benefit. But if you want to learn a lot and be part of a growing industry, this may work for you.

      Cons

      Extreme pressure to meet the numbers instead of the original statement to "do what it takes to make or keep the customer happy." Although you may have no experience in a certain aspect of the product and request assistance from another support engineer, managment insists you "take ownership" and continue helping the customer. The customer picks up quickly that you lack the knowledge to properly help, the customer then asks for someone who can help, but you have to answer that someone will get back to them later which can cause a loss in integrity. And learning on the spot in this manner can quickly burn out the employee.

      Pros

      VMware has provided for a stable job so far and the compensation seems to be at least on par with other companies. For the most part, the employees are friendly and pleasant to work with. Overall the company seems to be holding a reasonable course and should continue to be successful for some time to come. For the most part, you are given some flexibility in finding work that interests you.

      Cons

      The company has grown way too fast. The fast growth has allowed mediocre employees to excel in all the confusion. Sometimes there is a lot of chaos. Often there is a disconnect between management and engineers. The headquarters is located in a boring office park.
