Pros

Perks are on par, if not better than most companies in Silicon Valley. Location of the main office in Palo Alto is wonderful and provides opportunities to exercise outdoors. Many coworkers organize activities including running, soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and "bootcamp". VMware has one of the best technical staff I've worked with- they have to be by nature of the products that VMware develops. If you are into low level systems, I would wager there is no better place to work.

Cons

VMware is in dire need of good management having wasted years while waiting for Microsoft to create a virtualization product. Marketing could be better as everyone has heard of Microsoft's products, but not VMware's. For the engineers, the infrastructure leaves much to be desired. Automated testing is lacking, and manual QA is scattered throughout the world. A lot of time is wasted trying to track down issues with someone who is 12 hours ahead you leading to week long e-mail exchanges. Management seems to care more about counting beans than getting resources that engineers need to effectively do their job. Politics leading to changing requirements on top of poor communication leads to projects being late, scrapped, or rewritten unnecessarily.

Pros

Great product that you can believe in, opportunity to work on many different projects and in many different areas. Some very smart coworkers. Great green building and few cubes.

Cons

Senior management has basically ignored the last 50 years or so of management best practices. Discussion and rigorous thinking are basically discouraged -- if you can't yell it out in two sentences you are cut off. Decisions are mostly only top down -- sr management likes to give orders and commands but doesn't like listening to employees or customers. Finance and HR are staffed with mostly incompetent employees. Planning is dysfunctional so everything is a last minute fire drill. It is a fire drill culture so burn out and attrition are high. Sr management is mostly tone deaf to both employees and customers (partners are treated fairly well) so sr management is basically clueless as to why attrition is high and new products are not selling. The lack of listening and discussion has allowed some monumentally bad business decision to proceed.

Pros

The items that make VMware a good place to work include the people and the products we develop. VMware fosters a good team environment and most people will go above and beyond when needed. Benefits and other employee perks are in line with industry standard and VMware does a fair amount of philanthropic work

Cons

Because of our rapid growth we are going through constant changes. Middle management lacks the experience to run the business and senior management is not guiding them. THis lack of management creates a lot of friction within groups and leads to ambiguity. VMware is still searching for what they want to be when they grow up,
