Sad to see the downward spiral

Pros

The office provides good refreshments, cold-brew coffee, lunch. Also every Wednesday it offers breakfast (and cereal and milk are always available). Benefits are good and the company is even generous on holidays.

Cons

It's sad to see this downward spiral that the company is going along. As some comments mentioned, the upper management doesn't set a clear goal with expectations, and then it leads to ugly politics as if every team's goal is to look after themselves and maximize their territory. The company really has a big execution problem: it occupies a great spot in the gaming industry and then what? We got pumped up after the Pokemon Go craze, having hired a lot of people and many employees, who are also fans of Unity, having embraced the optimism as well as empowerment. Now, there comes the reality check? BTW, the Glassdoor rating comes from 4.6 to 3.8 (as of today) in a year. I have to say the HR plays a role here. Many other reviews said so and I think I can actually prove it from the HR response here at Glassdoor. "...Regarding reviews, our HR team is focused on things like culture, training, and benefits, and doesn't have the time to write reviews- plus there are technology filters and algorithms the site has set up to detect fraud..." - May 31, 2018 Unity Technologies What did I see? Dishonesty in bold capital letters. Why? You are a Unity HR employee (not Glassdoor) so how do you know "this site" has set up "technology filters and algorithms" to detect fraud? Did you actually try that (if so, it's a serious integrity issue and more) ? If not, you are just dishonest and want to respond whatever looks good to yourself to show Unity is in good shape. Also, while your HR team is so much focused, you still have time writing responses on Glassdoor (it doesn't take more time to write a 5-star all-good review, plus you can ask others to write). So, people are not stupid. That is exactly how Unity HR handle things.

It’s hard for me to reply to this review and the other reviews you wrote. I can see you are angry and seem to be in pain, which troubles me. From time to time we have employees who find themselves on a team or project that they aren’t happy about. They go to their manager or if their manager is the problem they go to the next level leader, another leader, HR or even our CEO. Unity is a very approachable culture. I’m not sure why you don’t feel you can do that but encourage you to try it. I promise you if you reach out to me or even John, you will be listened to and get an immediate response. The conversation will be confidential. Unity is filled with examples of employees sharing what’s not working as well as what is. They are engaged in making it better. If you join one of our internal Slack channels and in the round tables you would see the tremendous passion from the employees both for our customers but also for our company. Massive passion and pride. It would be great if you can reach out so we can address your situation. Elizabeth Brown--Unity Head of HR

Totally siloed and operationally dysfunctional

Pros

You will enjoy Unity if you love corporate politics and big egos. If you enjoy useless meetings, you will also like it here, because they are constantly in a state of planning, and never reach the hard part - execution of the plan. If you don't like your team/manager, just wait 6 weeks and you'll probably re-org anyways and start the cycle all over again.

Cons

Self-important and yet totally incompetent middle management. I literally couldn't tell you one thing that my manager produced or stuck with for more than 3 weeks. Technology Org steeped in toxic, clique-y culture. Very little career growth, and it's based on who your manager is (gatekeeping). Totally siloed and operationally dysfunctional. Not interested in any new ideas or hurting anyone's feelings which become major blockers to innovation and progress. Their disjointed product/website strategy reflect what Unity looks like on the inside - teams & systems that don't talk to each other, massive amounts of duplicate work, data all over the place, engineers and egos dictating business decisions, lack of transparency, and the most impressive non-answer answers from leadership I've ever seen.

Company Culture Has Been Destroyed

Pros

- Absolutely phenomenal community. - Outstanding colleagues (most of them). - Insanely intelligent people.

Cons

- Politics have become paramount; if you're not good at playing corporate politics, you won't last long, despite your talents/success in your role. - Culture has become incredibly corporate; family feeling has been largely lost, though this varies by office. - Abysmal stock options plans ("insulting" I have heard some employees say). - Poor bonus structure that doesn't reward the true talent in the company. - No 401K matching/generally poor benefits (though again better in some offices than in others). - You're one misstep away from being terminated, with no mentoring by senior management on how to improve. - Management says one thing, often means something completely different. - Company has strayed from its vision of "democratizing game development" by straying away from the core product while making it more accessible, while funneling developers in to their services offerings, at the expense of other options (this is not "democracy").
