Pros

Great and very talented individuals work here, with people from all types of industries and backgrounds. Decent health insurance.

Cons

Upper management are incredibly tone deaf and ignorant, and refuse to listen to any feedback that they don’t want to hear, despite their profession that the “best ideas win”. The company is plagued by constant layoffs and reorgs, and the CEO is a narcissist who plays it off like the company is making sound business decisions. They’ve slashed benefits multiple times in the last year, and have also denied severance and parental leave payouts to former employees. Not to mention they’ve pushed back the compensation cycle for all employees by 4 months. Upward momentum is non-existent, and management teams are defined by cronyism rather than merit. All in all it’s become a dumpster fire lately, and it’s clear that the executives are either incredibly out of touch, heartless, or both.

Unity is not right for everyone ...

Pros

As someone with considerable work experience, I had high expectations upon joining the company. Unfortunately, I didn't have a very positive experience while working there. As everyone's experience is a personal one, I'll omit sharing specific details. However, here is some brief information that may help you determine if Unity is the right fit for you: I found Unity's culture to be quite organic/chaotic in nature. After additional reflection, I consider it to be an "adhocracy" culture (little focus on process, greater focus on whiteboarding). Thus, if you come from a "corporate" environment, many of the best practices shared in those business settings are almost shunned at Unity. During my time there, I tried to introduce ways of thinking that I thought could make things a lot easier for me/us going forward, but my efforts were met with considerable resistance. I grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of consistency and communication. In contrast, if you are a "hacker" type, are new to the work environment (i.e., you have few opportunities to compare against), or have extensive technical experience, then Unity might be a match. On the plus side, I found Unity to be quite groundbreaking in terms of the capabilities being developed.

Cons

Pros

-My team is great and we collaborate well -Managers have been great and seem to really care -The work we do is impactful -I love what unity is doing in general

Cons

-Remote work flexibility: Many have the preference to be fully remote. Not being allowed to do this in the future is essentially asking us to commute/pay for childcare/live in high cost areas, just to do video calls with our global teams in the office. For technical roles, coming in occasionally makes sense but for non-technical roles it’s unnecessary. We’ve proven we are more than effective while working remotely, we’ve adapted and this should be considered. -Salaries for some non tech employees need some work, especially if required to be in office. Vancouver has the highest cost of living in North America currently, higher than SF... I’d prefer to live somewhere a couple hours away and stop into the office for larger events if needed. -diversity seems to need some work in BC.
