Pros

Decent money, good vacation time. Decent health insurance. Sick leave. You can get a job by taking the test and scoring high. You don't need a degree and you can earn more than a lot of people that have degrees.

Cons

Long hours. Unfair treatment. Favoritism. You have to overlook a lot of crap. The rules are interpreted to suit the ossaision. Rural carriers get paid by salary, no matter how long the workday can be, the pay remains the same. You will have to do a lot of physical labor every day. The general public thinks this is not possible and that we are overpaid to ride around in cars all day and just stick mail in boxes. We do all our own sorting and loading. Some of us have to provide and maintain our own vehicles. Customers think they have the right to disrespect us. They are quick to complain if we make a mistake, yet we might fix a lot of their mistakes in a days work and they won't ever know about it.

Pros

The pay is good but as an RCA you may wait several years before getting benefits. Mail doesn't talk back. Getting to know your customers is pretty neat too, so long as you get to work the same route pretty often.

Cons

They always tell you what you did wrong and never any praise. But let a custome call with a complaint and they are johnny on the spot to let you know that you screwed up and sometimes you didn't even do it!

Pros

The US Postal Service is a pretty good career opportunity. It has great health benifits, good pay, retirement and leave time. Carriers are promoted based on a seniority level, which gives equal opportunity to all employees. You work everyday knowing that your job is important and that the service you provide is appreciated by "most". You get to meet alot of people in your community for which you may never have had the chance. Your customers are people that you grow to care about. Overall I would have to say that it is a pretty good career choice....for the money.

Cons

People do not understand what all their rural carrier does on a daily basis to ensure that their mail is delivered to them. They do not realize the hours we spend sorting the mail and casing the mail or the time constraint that we're under. Also, when you are an RCA you are always on call. Your hours are not guaranteed. Some weeks you will work everyday and the next you might work one day. You also have to do routes sometimes that you dont know which can be stressful. It is probably one of the hardest jobs out there....But the pay is great!!
