Pros

Fringe benefits (heath ins. , school payments) surpass many companies both small and large. I took this job to help me pay my way through school and it is more than helping me to do that. I am also able to live on my own completely independent of outside help (parents, etc) in the STL metro area. I also am fortunate to work for someone who gives me space to do my job and is also close to me in age which makes it easier to juggle work and school.

Cons

Long/weird hours, no recognition for good work. no balance between work/home life. Also, our HR people suck. They make dumb/shortsighted hires that ensure an already high turnover rate gets no better. Other than our busy season we seem to ALWAYS be understaffed (which means middle managers and even my boss working often). Also, I don't understand how our raises are calculated yearly. I wan les than thrilled with my figure this past march.

Pros

UPS has a very strong culture of promoting from within. It is very easy to move up in the company if you display good management qualities and can work with people. Most management people do give 110% to get the job done everyday. The compensation plan is geared toward long-term employment and you can definitely raise a family on the salary and stock bonuses provided. Upper management clearly defines your job responsibilities and many opportunities for additional training are available to those wishing to improve themselves. The corporate culture that surrounds employment at UPS is very strong and gives employees a true sense of purpose. Every employee is well aware of the story of the founder James E. Casey, the man that created UPS in Seattle in 1907.

Cons

The hours that employees are required to work can be challenging... especially around the holidays. The expectation is that employees put in 50 hours each week and 60 hours each week during peak season, which lasts from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. The work/life balance is also a major detractor from working at UPS. It is good to receive recognition for a job well done, but there is a cost. The company attempts to increase the quality of life of its employees, but the discussions on work/life balance appear to be just that; discussions. Concerns about brought up by individual employees regarding work/life balance usually fall on deaf ears.

Pros

One of the worlds' largest companies--looks great on a resume. One of the few companies that still offers a pension. Benefits are excellent--I'm not aware of any other company (including government) that offers benefits that compare with UPS in terms of cost to employee. Promotion from within can allow people starting in entry-level jobs to advance to senior levels without needing lots of experience or education.

Cons

There is no regard for work/life balance. 24/7/365 environment means that all employees (regardless of department or job function) can work any time, any place, any where. Standard workday is 9.5 hours for all (not including lunch). Career paths within the company almost always involve transfers to various locations and various departments (operations, package delivery, and staff departments).
