Pros

Lecturer salary is probably better than most in the LA area. At least in my department, lecturers have significant autonomy to structure their classes, methods of evaluation, etc. There are lots of other interesting people around, and the students are good.

Cons

My department could be more friendly; given that anyone in academia has most of their interactions with others in their home department this can be somewhat of a drag.

Pros

UCLA is a large institution. There are many opportunities in the healthcare field and in the academic area. The benefits package is wonderful with many paid vacation, sick and holidays.

Cons

The pay compared to other institutions is low. They say that the benefits package makes up for the lower pay, but for those who are just starting a career the focus is on the payday amount. UCLA seems to always be in a state of chaos and restructure.
