Pros

Job security is one thing that you will always have with public sector work. There are a ton of vacation days that are paid in addition to personal and sick days. In many cases you hit the ceiling for your personal and sick days with normal usage.

Cons

Job security is a double-edged sword also means little room for advancement.

Pros

UCLA has an upbeat, optimistic atmosphere. The work you do supports important advancements in science, culture and the arts. Management is usually concerned with employee well being. UCLA has opportunities is almost every field and likes to promote people from within, making it easy to start a job and change concentration or job type.

Cons

Pay is lower than in industry positions, Seniority not merit determines many issues. State labor laws and unions regulations can make many aspects of the job more cumbersome. Work hours might be limited, overtime can be limited or even prohibited. Union strikes happen once every couple years.
