Pros

The evironment is friendly and everyone pretty much knows your name after the first week. They are flexible with work hours and they allow you to take time off if necessary without much trouble. Benefits are average for a university but they give you a pension plan after you work 20+ years and they do provide you options for transportaiton to school without breaking the bank. Depending on the boss, there isn't much politics you would have to do in order to get things done. Starting out work for new experiences would work out best here before you transistion into the real world.

Cons

Don't expect to move up the corporate ladder so easily because people are around for 20+ years at the same job. Your work doesn't get appreciated with salary or career advancement so alot of people tend to do just average at their job. Paperwork tends to be extremely difficult because everything has to get processed through the regents office before coming back to you, espeically reinbursements. Things can get kinda boring after a year and your learning curve will plateau after a few years. Longevity is key at this university, but would not be good for a lab position after a year or two.

Pros

I was working in an internship position that gave me a lot of flexibility and provided a great learning opportunity. My boss was very concerned with my education and would go to great lengths to help me in my understanding. He assigned me reasonable tasks and gave me a great deal of leeway to get them accomplished. There was a good level of interaction among employees and everyone was glad to help me when I needed clarification or more information. I was able to take time off when I needed to and I was relatively free in choosing my hours.

Cons

The pay at UCLA was not as great as working at other engineering internships as I have had in the past. A lot of the tasks that I was required to do were kind of repetitive, and some of the working conditions were rather extreme, it being often quite hot and noisy, and needing to work around steam piping a great deal of the time was rather dangerous, although proper safety precautions were taught and implemented. I did not see a great deal of opportunity for developing a career that would have been very fulfilling, it would have been tedious work that I did not find very stimulating.

Pros

Retirement and benefits. That's it.

Cons

Management and leadership is terrible. Petty and personal agendas dominate the working landscape making for inefficient workking environment, inconsistent treatment and little to no chance of professional growth or advancement. And the pay is not competitive. So many people are so overly protective and paranoid.
