Old-Fashioned and Toxic

Pros

You can get some first-hand knowledge of the security industry. Depending on what department you're in you may have the opportunity to perform a broader range of tasks than you would at a larger company.

Cons

With few exceptions, it's a toxic organization. It's very old-fashioned in how it operates internally for a technology company. Upper management is a combination of machismo, salesmanship and aw-shucks faux-southern charm. Also of note is how the entire company is run by sales with almost no real effort to bring in business by simply attracting it. I witnessed a steady exodus of talent in my time there and an increasing inability to attract impressive candidates.

Pros

You will surely learn a lot within this organization and in this type of position. SecureWorks monitors and manages a huge variety of device types from almost any vendor that our client's want us to. We are exposed to all of these devices, their alerts, and the mass amount of threats that target the wide range of clientele. Clean career path development plans for promotions within the team exist. This provides a plan that you can align your work with to excel and eventually get promoted following the plan.

Cons

It seemed for the longest time that the hard work of Security Operations Center Analysts were not recognized and appreciated. A lot of this has recently been changing quite a bit and these things seem to be improving dramatically. One issue that persists seems to be that the general viewpoints of Managers and analysts alike, within the different SOCs do not always seem to align, whether these are related to specific technical aspects of the job or personal philosophies.
