Resistance Is Futile...

Pros

Great work-life balance, decent pay, still retains a few vestiges of its former biotech glory

Cons

The Big Pharma Borg is slowly but surely assimilating us into its "Boston Hub", and despite all reassurances that they wanted to preserve the "Genzyme Culture" of innovation, blah-blah-blah, it's proven to be impossible. Maybe they really meant what they said, and just can't help themselves, maybe not. But the sad truth is that we're now part of a massive bureaucracy, and every Dilbert- or Kafkaesque nightmare you've heard about such ponderous beasts is proving remarkably accurate. We will eventually drown in the mire of dysfunctional process management, and the question we all face is to accept this and collect the paycheck, or move on to a more nimble, albeit riskier prospect that satisfies the needs of the entrepreneur. It's a tough choice.

Pros

Nice facilities, good health benefits and 401k. company had a solid portfolio when I was there and definitely was well positioned for the future.

Cons

Atmosphere was poisoned by favoritism and backstabbing. Sr Management tended to rule over their subjects rather than foster a more inclusive environment. I had an advanced degree and 10 years of experience before joining the company but there were less qualified individuals who were promoted because they kissed up more. Pay was below what I made for the same job eslewhere but the location was closer to home which is why I worked there. Lot of clock watchers at SP who would write you up if you weren't in your chair by 8AM on the dot, that was annoying and demotivating especially for employees with children who were in daycare. Upward mobility was virtually non-existent unless you went the sales route. If you did not want the sales route your options were pretty much non-existent for advancement except to leave the company which I did. Since that time my salary has doubled what it was at SP, I can't imagine having anywhere near that level of success had I stayed.
