Awful, awful, awful

Pros

The money was ok. Fair holidays.

Cons

Discussed at interview flexible working only to join and be told there was no flexible working, you set your hours and must be sat at your desk between these hours even if you arrive early or have commitments on other dates. No fridges, no microwaves and no kettles so basically forced to buy lunch from outside. No talking, no headphones are allowed to be listened to. No working from home, and oddest of all the technology is about 10 years behind, no laptops which is very odd and such a waste of time. Joined and was not introduced to any of HR and didn't have a clue who my HR rep was the full 2 weeks of employment. If you are thinking of moving from a company that treats you like a human being then I wouldn't bother, you will only spend your evenings crying to your partner about what an awful day you have had!

Thank you for taking the time to review your two weeks with Sanctuary. We’re sorry to hear your experience wasn't a positive one. Our Flexible Working policy and procedure provides all staff with the option to request working hours to balance work and home commitments. There are sites within the Group that do not have kitchen facilities. This is the case at our Worcester office however there is an on-site restaurant and it’s only a short walk into town. The provision of a laptop or home working are available depending on the role undertaken within the organisation. We have a dedicated HR team across the country and all details are available on Solis and contained within our staff induction programme. We also have a national network of peer elected Staff Council reps to support and signpost staff. If you would like to discuss further details of your concerns, we’d be pleased to speak to you, and you can email resourcing.team@sanctuary-housing.co.uk.

Very out of touch with staff

Pros

You gain 1 day annual leave for each year of service (most companies now do this so not such a pro)

Cons

Where to start... Bullying attitude of management, some managers have only got promotion due to their face fitting and not actually what they have to offer. One of the biggest issues that has started is “passing the buck to a different team” higher management like to blame different departments for bad figures not actually taking responsibility for their own bad management and performance of their team. Staff do not want to work for management as it is very clear that they have their “favourites”. Restructure is a way they like to change things, however it doesn’t work. Last restructure removed a whole department and passed to a central team, who do not have the training, skills or opportunity to actually do the work, so it’s just left and not worried about. Then when a director mentions it, the staff are pulled from their usual job and told they need to focus on this project, however no training provided so they don’t know what to do and then it’s the staffs fault when it goes wrong.

Poor Exit Experience

Pros

Generally the company is a good stop gap for the CV or job to pay the bills, but is not for long term or development. Not many people actually like their job or colleagues

Cons

I worked here for 5-10 years in a central support role, I left 3 months ago to do an identical job for a competitor paying 25% more. Nobody asked me the actual reason I was leaving or for feedback; I was not offered an exit interview/survey. My manager took my resignation extremely poorly and excluded and belittled me, leaving a sour taste after so long in the business, after speaking to the next line Manager, it was clearly not going to be addressed. I didn't feel like there was any incentive to stay or anybody valued what I did. I'd repeatedly asked for development and progression or simply recognition for all of the additional responsibility I took on, which is eventually why I left; feeling under valued. I think the business is trying to achieve too much with too little resource; a significant number of management have left.

We’re very sorry that your exit experience was poor. Our leaver surveys are re-launching in the new year to capture feedback from staff who are moving on from Sanctuary. Regarding pay reviews, we are committed to offer pay and terms that are competitive in the market to ensure we can recruit and retain staff that are best able to deliver our services. We regularly test the market via a number of means to achieve this, including staff submitting information to the HR Services team where appropriate. Although we do make staff aware of the option to leave a review on Glassdoor, we do ask for them to give an honest overview of working at Sanctuary, and do not request for the reviews to be positive. We take feedback very seriously and look to improve our approach where possible. Should you wish to discuss your experience confidentially with a member of the HR team, please do get in touch.
