Pros

We have wonderful opportunities of completing software development courses from prominent external instructors. Learning seminars are frequently held with either internal or invited speakers. Employees help each other in the technical communities. Opportunities to move to other groups, or even change job categories.

Cons

Some segments have very tight budget restrictions (ex. traveling) under the current economy, and it causes occasional inconvenience on distributed projects across the countries. Fresh graduates must complete a 3-year fix step training (quite often lags way more than 3 years) before becoming eligible for applying a senior position.

Pros

Great health/life insurance program for employees. Lots of experience on jobs (although you quickly learn that SLB's technology is not nearly as guarded or sophisticated as they like to portray). You get to travel a lot, which is a pro and con for some. In my experience, I lived and worked in Brazil, Mexico and Russia. I really loved meeting new people from all over the world.

Cons

There are zero rights for new hires. I worked 50 consecutive days to begin my training period. I was given less than a week off in my first 4 months, which spanned Christmas and New Years. I'm not talking about vacation, I'm discussing days off, similar to weekends in the US. My start date was changed 5 times before I finally told them "if this next date does not work out, I will seek other employment." Supposed to start in June and Started in September--no offer of pay advance or help was made. The job is 24/7, literally. It wouldn't be bad if they honored their employees' days off...but they don't. Most people work days off, in all locations. They say your salary will be in excess of 100K, which it is close. However, for my year at SLB my effective hourly wage was $13/hour. You can make a more fair hourly rate at McDonalds than Schlumberger.
