Pros

Most departments have a very realistic attitude about work vs. life. Medical, gym, pool, cafeterias all available on a beautifully manicured campus decorated with sculpture. Everyone has a private office and there is an ergonomics department that will go to great lengths to make sure your body is comfortable. Vacation is average, pay is average.

Cons

There is no real career path. Skillsets can be very odd. Older employees (20+ yr veterans) are routinely pushed out of the company due to lack of current skills. Newer hires come in with more current programming skills. There is no scenario in which you would be rewarded for extraordinary effort, or for that matter fired for being a slacker. Most immediate managers are excellent, middle managers are average, upper management is clueless.

Pros

For the most part, everyone treats everyone else with respect. While there have been layoffs, they were not due to market conditions so job security is pretty real. Employees are treated as adults management doesn't do stupid things that tick you off, like every other place I've worked.

Cons

Pay is steady, if not spectacular. Quality of middle managers varies wildly, and newly promoted managers are given no training whatsoever. The HR department is particularly bad about not meeting manager training needs and firing people at the drop of a hat if the manager says he wants to get rid of you.
