Pros

The pay and benefits are above average in the industry. The products are of decent quality. The commute is easy for anyone living in Marin County or San Francisco.

Cons

The only people who succeed at Restoration Hardware's Home Office are syncophants who never question anything said or done by the Co-CEO, Gary Friedman. The entire Home Office is a joke -- it's run like some childish popularity contest where you only succeed by back-stabbing your co-workers. There's no support from upper management as they are all only concerned with their own personal financial success. Even as they were doing three separate, massive layoffs in the course of less than two years (2007-2008) no one in upper management took a minimal pay cut or even considered it. There is completely wasteful spending on the part of Mr. Friedman that never allows for the proper level of staffing at the lower levels of Home Office -- some people work 60-70 hours a week while others enjoy daily two-hour lunches and don't even work 30 hours, even though they are salaried. This company will NEVER be successful until it cleans out the entire upper management team. And because it's such a toxic environment, the turnover rate is astronomically high as all the talented people have other options to find work elsewhere, so what you're left with are the less talented people who are stuck there becasue they can't get hired anywhere else. Sad.

Pros

Other than the fact that they pay you on time and there are some good individuals who work there, I can't think of a single positive thing to say about this company.

Cons

The lack of communication between home office management and labor is abysmal. The manager of my department NEVER had department meetings so we were never on the same page. Although they talk the big talk and have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars indoctrinating new employees about the so-called "Resto Values," in actuality, the whole business psychology system they're attempting to put in place is a farce. During the four and a half years I worked there, the Restoration Hardware guidelines were never followed by my managers (by the way, there were four managers in as many years!) concerning truthfullness, transparency, and interpersonal behaviors. Time after time upper management rewarded blatantly mediocre performance by incompetent managers. Initiative by several employees in my department and in other departments was squashed time and again. Forget about advancement opportunities: Restoration Hardware hires OUTSIDE the company far more often than promoting within the company. The enormous salary divide between upper- and mid-level management serves only to completely blow morale. I don't know if this is germane, but the product line is quite passé: in these days of economic downturn, who needs a $20,000 leather sofa for their 3rd home?

Pros

There’s a five word minimum Just kidding. - great look on your resume - major company - good health benefits (not great)

Cons

What an amazing way to absolutely dismantle any true belief system in RH. Worked for the hospitality side and it was hell on earth on that rooftop. “Leadership” playing favorites, “Leaders” lacking true care and responsibility for the associates and dismal communication. No real sense of accountability and the lack of effort to make changes is wild. It’s a tip pool people, a disgusting and atrociously run tip pool as well. Imagine the Leaders saying you’re supposed to have all the support in the world and they’re never to be found. Imagine working a 6 hour shift only to work 3 more hours of side work because the system deems that “no other location has or needs” something. Imagine making 3-4K in sales a shift, seeing 700-1100 in your tips and you not only need to wait till the end of payroll to see your actual tips, but when you get it, it’s only 30 percent of tips. And no breakdown of what you’re actually making. Great job for those who like to keep their head down and just work and be a cog in the system. Don’t get me started on the Mean Girl syndrome of those in “favor” with the leaders.
