Pros

If you are a kiss up to the right people and have no education beyond high school, you probably won't get paid better anywhere else and can move up.

Cons

Most people are fake, because they feel they have to act so happy and talk about how great Publix is no matter how they feel. I worked in corporate and saw this first hand. The jobs are boring. Most people are just trying to make other people look bad and blame everyone on someone else instead of admitting their mistakes. Most Directors and VPs don't even have a college degree, just have been there long enought to know the right people to kiss up to. If you are educated, go to another company. You will be underpaid in this company with no opportunity for advancement. Everyone thinks Publix associates are well-paid and have great benefits. Most people that work at Publix don't make great money and actually shop at Wal-Mart because they can't afford Publix groceries. Health insurance is expensive, and the stock is nothing like it used to be. Promotion from within is nothing like it used to be. Jobs are posted on the website only becuase they have to be, everyone knows who will get the job already.

Pros

You will have a somewhat stable job, as in you won't get fired unless you are late or call in all the time. Hours however is a different story. They do give employees private Publix stock that generally gains value every year. You will get on the job training for the department you're in.

Cons

Everything else. Every post you read on this site about this company being better in the past is 100% true. I worked there for over ten years and even when I was first hired the company was already starting to rot away from the inside, according to my co-workers. It's so much worse now, unless you're a fat cat investor. Mr. George is no longer with us and neither is the will of the company to care about you, the human being that is the tiny cog in the very huge machine. Recently in the past few years they have implemented cost cutting measures designed specifically to not only cut down on any raises you may receive, but actually dock your pay and hours if you "underperform" on evaluations which is highly objective to your, perhaps unqualified, immediate manager. In the past there were no caps on raises if you were a good worker, they are now severely limited to 25 cents per six months if you're a perfect angel. Requirements for health insurance have gone up, it is nearly impossible to qualify unless you are full-time. Favoritism is a very real thing and in full effect here when it comes to hours and promotions. Instead of having human beings make schedules that make sense to people who have real life issues they now have a system called OASIS that makes the schedules for everyone and a computer doesn't care if your kid has baseball practice after school or if you have a second job. You can make requests for days and time, but that doesn't mean you're going to get it if the computer says you're needed. Don't count on getting full-time anytime soon, your schedules will vary wildly (close one night, open the next morning), and you're lucky to get enough hours to make a decent living wage. Yeah, it's true that they won't fire you unless you are outright disorderly, but if you are unliked they will give you merely 5-10 hours a week until you quit from frustration. On the other hand if you do get full-time they will work you like a dog and put expectations on your shoulders that are ludicrous. If you don't finish on time, no matter how much work you had to do or despite doing it at neck break speed, you will get in trouble and a bad evaluation which means you don't get that piddly 25 cents after half a year.

Pros

The money is better than most supermarkets.

Cons

Dont ever get hurt on the clock with this company. They will tell you how much they care about there employess and the treat you worse than a roach on the floor. I fell and broke several bones.and was still made to work part time hours for 180 days. My boss called my doctor told her to get my paperwaork in order and get me back on the job. I needed surgery...i was denied. iAfter a year and of course and attorney I got my surgery but, I had nerve damage due to working like that and not getting what I needed. I had to have lots of meds..which they would deny for weeks while my attorney fought with them to get them approved. I was denied MRI's, Physical Therapy, injections that I needed. I was told by a doctor that they sent me to for a evaluation for them that I was faking it. On top of all of that I had to fight for my weekly pay...I went months with out it. My family and I lost our home. I had to pay for wheel chair, shower chair, some medications, After years I still am fighting for what I need. I have nerve damage and can not walk well. Yet they follow me around..or they employee some one to do this. Trying to deny me everything. I have been to their doctors, physicologist, neurosurgeons who would disagree with all of my therapist, doctors, physical therapists. They will judge you, treat you like a liar. Then they will pay therapist to preform evaluations on you and pay them to lie for them. I am not alone in this others hurt warned me and since I have been hurt are going throught the same thing. When I first got hurt I was waraned this would happen by upper mangement. All of this has caused a fatal disease for me that is linked to the medications I was given they have their insurance company to say that it isnt related to my injury althought it has been proven that it is. So they will not approve what I need. I was left without my health insurance, life insurance, etc. Before this I truly belived in this company. They go out and help build homes for habitat, they are help with united way, they do fundrasiers but, this is how they treat there employess., I was a very upstanding employee and was well known as an elite employee by upper mangement....this happen and I was treated sooo bad. I wish I could tell you all lthe horror I went through with this company for several years trying to get better and just to get what I needed. I was shocked at how many people like me who worked for this company has been treated in this manner. I wonder what George Jenkins would think if he was alive today about this Ed Crenshaw they care for families (unless you get hurt working for them).
