Lots of talk but not much action

Pros

The culture at site level ‘at the coal face’ is fantastic. The employees genuinely care about the company being successful and do their very best even with the constant, seemingly poorly thought out challenges pushed upon the team from above.

Cons

Lack of career progression/lack of reward. There’s apparently a mentoring program in place but it is not widely promoted. Develop you was hyped up then absolutely no follow through. Even when following the advice given to ensure a place on programs such as the mentoring program nothing happens and there is no communication of adjusted time frames etc. Peabody seem happy for employees to undertake higher level tasks with a lower level title to avoid paying the higher salary also.

Pros

The people - most employees generally care about the company and ensuring its success. Morale on some sites is exceptional and feels like a family if you get a good one. I had one outstanding manager at Peabody who is now a mentor I go to for advice.

Cons

Lack of career progression - someone has to retire or resign for opportunities to come up and even when they do, the competition is fierce. Diversity is a problem - the executive level is almost entirely male and middle aged and while there is a lot of robust conversations going on about how to address this, action is limited. The work environment is extremely inflexible, having now worked at an organisation who do flexible work amazingly well, Peabody really pales in comparison. You are also not looked at for promotion if you work part time - I was told all managers must be full time otherwise you are not serious about your career.
